    The Cypriot government is very close to concluding an agreement with Russia for a 2.5 billion euro loan, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Saturday.

    Replying to a question, during a press briefing, whether the loan will be subject to a bilateral agreement, Stephanou echoed the remarks made by the Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias, adding that efforts are being made for the refinancing of Cyprus` maturing debt.

    ``It is true that we are close to an agreement, which however is not closed yet,`` he said.

    Speaking to the press following a Council of Ministers meeting yesterday, Kazamias said that the government is in consultations with Russia for concluding a 2.5 billion euro deal and that he hopes the agreement will be finalized if the terms are considered favourable.

    Kazamias noted that the funds will be used to refinance maturing debt and boost liquidity in the economy.

    [02] EU CYPRUS READINESS TO ASSIST

    EU Regional Policy Commissioner Johannes Hahn has assured that the European Commission will consider the possibilities for financial assistance to Cyprus under the EU Solidarity Fund, following a massive explosion in ``Evaggelos Florakis`` naval base in the southern coast of the island, which killed 13 persons and crippled Cyprus` main power station in nearby Vasiliko.

    Hahn`s assurance were made in a letter to Cypriot MEP Takis Hadigeorgiou who pointed out that although the EU Solidarity Fund is limited to natural disasters, it could cover Cyprus in case of extraordinary regional disasters resulting in damage affecting the major part of its population.

    ``I would like to assure you that the Commission will consider possibilities under the EU Solidarity Fund, which would cover direct damage in the public domain after natural disasters. We are ready to assess an application for assistance from the Solidarity Fund as quickly as possible, should the Cypriot authorities decide to submit it,`` Hahn notes in his letter, adding that the application must be sent within 10 weeks from the occurrence of the disaster, namely by 19 September.

    Hahn also said his services ``stand ready to discuss with the Cypriot authorities if they decide to proceed with a reprogramming of the current cohesion policy programmes in order to assess the aftermath of the explosion.

    [03] FM EU GENERAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL

    Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Markoullis will attend the EU General Affairs Council to be held in Brussels on Monday, 12 September.

    According to an official press release, in the framework of the Council the Cypriot FM will hold meetings with Foreign Ministers and European Affairs Ministers from other member states, as well as EU officials. She is expected to raise the issue of Turkish threats on Cyprus as a result of the Republics intention to exploit natural resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone.

    The Cypriot Minister will also attend a meeting of the Presidency trio with the European Parliament for the long-term fiscal framework.

    [04] CYPRIOT SHOOTER RECORD

    Cypriot shooter Antri Eleftheriou equaled women`s skeet record of 74 of 75 hits in ISSF`s 2011 World Championship taking place in Belgrade, Serbia.

    Eleftheriou broke her previous Cypriot record of 73/75 hits. Eleftheriou qualified in the Women`s Skeet Final with 74/75 hits along with Germany`s Christine Wenzel also with 74/75 and China`s Ning Wei who qualified with 73/75.

    However, Eleftheriou missed three targets in the final shootout, finishing fourth with 22/25 hits. Wenzel won the final with 24/25 hits clinching her third world title. Wei won the second place after a shoot-off with USA`s Kimberly Rhode who finished third.
