  • [01] LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKS

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu discussed on Tuesday the Property issue, during the UN-led direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the community leaders brought along a series of proposals on property issue, which will be discussed amongst the negotiating teams this afternoon. He also announced that the UN property people will be meeting with the negotiating teams in separate meetings on Wednesday and that leaders will resume their talks on Thursday, September 8.

The two teams will be meeting this afternoon to analyze in a great deal more detail the specifics that were put forward today, without going into the specifics, because weve agreed we wont do that, there is a quite a lot to think about here and to work through. I think some convergences can be built actually, myself, I think thats possible, Downer said.

Downer said that the meeting was held in a good atmosphere, underlying that this is an example of both sides continuing to work hard to try to build convergences.

He also told the press that on Wednesday he will be briefing the Security Council in an informal session -via video link-on how the talks are going and then he will deal with any issues that they themselves (SC members) may wish to raise.

I want to keep the Security Council informed so that they understand how we are getting on in the talks, what the difficulties are, what the problems are, and where the progress is being made, he said, noting that ultimately the Security Council wants to know whether its possible for the two sides to fulfill what the Security Council requires of them, which is to negotiate successfully a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

The UN Special Adviser also referred to the meeting he had with Greek FM on Monday. He said that Cyprus problem and broader regional issues were discussed. Obviously, it really is important to us from time to time to meet with the Guarantor powers, and particularly with the Turks and the Greeks; so I do that from time to time, he said.

Replying to a question about President Christofias leaving early today, Downer said that he skipped lunch and that his negotiating team stayed behind.

The two teams stayed here just for lunch. We have just been having lunch. The meeting itself had finished, he concluded.

    [02] OMIROU - CYPRUS - EEZ

President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou has stressed that Cyprus has a sovereign right to explore and exploit its natural gas resources located in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Omirou, who received Tuesday Ambassador of Austria to Cyprus, Martin Weiss, was referring to Turkish threats against Cyprus` right to explore any hydrocarbon reserves in its EEZ.

He also briefed the Austrian Ambassador on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue, and noted that unfortunately no satisfactory progress has been achieved so far on the core issues of the problem during the Cyprus talks, held between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Omirou also underlined that a broad conference on the Cyprus issue will not be held unless the two sides have reached an agreement over the internal aspects of the solution.

    [03] EXPLOSION - ASSISTANCE

Cyprus will by next week lodge to the EU an application for financial assistance over the damage inflicted to the island by the July 11 blast in naval base in Mari, in the southeast coast of the island, killing 13 persons, the shockwave of which destroyed Cyprus` main power station in nearby Vasiliko, Head of the Planning Bureau Giorgos Georgiou said on Tuesday.

Speaking to CNA, Georgiou said the Bureau will submit an application for assistance from the EU Solidarity Fund and will be invoking the EU Treaty article 122 which provides for EU financial assistance to member-states facing difficulties ``in the supply of certain products, notably in the area of energy,`` which takes place for the first time in the EU.

``The application for assistance from the Solidarity Fund will be submitted before the September 19 deadline,`` Georgiou told CNA, adding that the Bureau ``would like to be absolutely sure on the integrity of the application.``

According to the Fund`s rules, the application should be submitted no later than ten weeks after the first damage caused by the disaster.``

    [04] CYPRUS - SUBSOIL

There are only limited areas presenting findings of potential pollution in the soil and subsoil of Cyprus, according to the conclusions of a symposium that took place in Nicosia, in which the Geochemical Atlas of Cyprus was released.

The symposium was hosted by the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking during a press conference here today, the Director of the Department Eleni Georgiou-Morisseau said that, according to the symposiums conclusions, the natural environment of Cyprus is in good standing and that potential pollution is located only in very limited areas.

Problematic areas, she went on, include urban areas, polluted by the impact of modern life style, as well as underground waters. Moreover, she noted that there is a high concentration of chemical elements in a relatively large area, in the valley of Polis Chrysochous, in the north-eastern part of Cyprus. These finding need to be further assessed, Morisseau noted.
