Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis has expressed the Republic`s gratitude to Israel for providing generators and medical assistance after the deadly explosion of munitions at a naval base near Limassol, which rendered the island`s main power station inoperable.

Speaking before her departure for Paris to attend the international conference on Libya, Markoullis said she met with Israeli officials last week during a one-day trip to Israel.

Replying to questions, Markoullis said her agenda in Israel did not allow her to visit a heavily wounded Cypriot, who was injured during the blast on July 11, but noted that government officials have visited him and prepared a report on his condition, which she said is improving.

Thirteen people were killed and dozens were injured when a massive explosion occurred at ``Evangelos Florakis`` naval base, near Limassol, on July 11. The blast occurred in containers, full of munitions, which Cyprus had confiscated from ``Monchegorsk``, a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009. Nicosia was acting in accordance with UN sanctions against Teheran.

Regarding the issue of a Cypriot being held in Qatar since August 26 on the accusation that he voiced bomb threats on an Etihad flight, Markoullis said that, to her knowledge, the Cypriot is still in custody in Qatar.

Referring to her trip to Paris, Markoullis said she will be taking part in the international conference on Libya, which is an initiative of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron. The conference will be attended by 50 countries and ten international organisations.

``It is a very important meeting, during which issues of political support to the National Transitional Council will be discussed,`` she said, adding that Cyprus has recently recognised the Council as the legal representatives of the Libyan people.

Markoullis said Cyprus is participating in order ``to see how we can help at this significant moment for the Libyan people.``

From Paris, Markoullis will fly to Poland, to participate in the EU Informal Gymnich, to be held on September 2 and 3. The Ministers will discuss the Middle East, Libya, Syria, and EU relations with countries such as South Africa, Ukraine and Belarus.

    CYPRUS PEACE TALKS - CONTINUATION

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will be holding a new meeting on Friday, in the context of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem, and will be continuing discussions on the issue of territory.

The meeting will take place at the residence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim, in the UN-protected area in Nicosia.

During their last meeting on August 26, the leaders of the two communities discussed the issue of territory and agreed that the issue of maps and figures would be discussed at the very end of the process.

[02] PORTUGAL CYPRUS UEFA EURO 2012

Portugal national soccer team arrived Wednesday in Cyprus to face the Cypriot national team for the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying round.

The Cyprus Portugal match will be held at GSP stadium, in Nicosia, on September 2.

The game kicks off at 21:45(local time).

According to a press release issued by the Cyprus Football Association, ahead of tomorrow`s game, the Portuguese national team will have on Thursday a training session at GSP stadium, followed by a press conference to be held by the coach of the team Paulo Bento, at GSPs Conference Center.

The coach of the Cyprus National team Nikos Nioplias noted that we must be 100% focused and very disciplined if we want to get a positive result against Portugal.
