  • [01] FOREIGN MINISTER - ISRAEL - VISIT

The visit of Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis to Israel was ``an expression of the progress and the strengthening of relations between the two nations, as can be seen from the important visit of the Cypriot President several months ago and the forthcoming visit of President Peres in Cyprus,`` according to the website of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The press release featured on the website noted that Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Liberman met on Wednesday in Jerusalem with Markoullis and said he was ``glad to host her, especially as this is the second bilateral visit she has made, after visiting Greece, since becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs.``

``Liberman said that this is an expression of the progress and the strengthening of relations between the two nations, as can be seen from the important visit of the Cypriot President several months ago and the forthcoming visit of President Peres in Cyprus, as well as from the many meetings held between ministers of both countries over the last two and a half years,`` the press release notes.

It adds that Markoullis ``expressed her great appreciation for Israels assistance after the explosion`` at the naval base near Limassol, and that Liberman ``thanked Cyprus for its assistance in the battle to extinguish the Carmel fire.``

Both Ministers ``welcomed the Exclusive Economic Zone agreement that was signed between the two countries, stating that this was a bilateral issue that must be implemented as soon as possible to enable the initiation of the gas production process for the benefit of both parties and that the agreement was signed in accordance with the rules and rights of international law,`` according to the press release.

It says ``they also discussed the Middle East situation`` and that Liberman ``stated that the Palestinian attempt to reach unilateral decisions without direct negotiations between the parties constitutes a dangerous precedent in the international arena, which will have implications in other places around the globe.``

He added that ``he hopes that the international community will not support the unilateral Palestinian move, and will make it clear to them that the only way to achieve goals is through direct negotiations,`` it concludes.

    [02] CYPRUS TALKS - MEETING

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will hold a meeting on Friday, in the framework of the direct talks aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

This is the fifth of a series of all day meetings to take place over the next several weeks until October, as agreed during a meeting between the leaders of the two communities and the UN Secretary General in Geneva on July 7th, 2011.

The previous meeting took place on Tuesday, August 23, and according to UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim leaders continued discussion on governance and power sharing. She also had said that the leaders will meet again on Friday in accordance to their agreed schedule, to discus the remaining chapters.

    [03] POWER SUPPLY - AGREEMENT

All the necessary arrangements in order to continue the power supply from the occupied areas of Cyprus will be made, President of Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Manthos Mavromatis has stated.

In statements to CNA, Mavromatis said that the duration of the contract with the private company in the occupied areas has not yet been agreed. He explained that the duration will depend on the needs of the Republic of Cyprus for electricity during the next months.

Replying to a question, Mavromatis said that there have been consultations with the private company but the final contract will be signed by the end of August.

    [04] IDALION - EXCAVATIONS

Á major Hellenistic and Roman Bath Complex beside the Lymbia Road was revealed during the 2011 summer investigations of Lycoming College archaeological expedition at Idalion under the direction of Dr Pamela Gaber.

In an official press release, Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announces the completion of the 2011 summer investigations to Idalion.

According to the Department of Antiquities, the bath complex is extraordinary in that it was founded in the Hellenistic Period, probably in the 3rd century BCE and continued in use into the Roman Period, certainly into the 1st century CE.

In addition to the bath complex, the expedition excavated a temple known as The Sanctuary of the Paired Deities which is dedicated to a pair of gods represented by standing stones. The press release says that there are numerous altars and sacrificial ash pits in this temple, and this year the Lycoming College team discovered a series of impressive channels constructed to carry water into a kind of grotto in bedrock underlying the Temple structure.
