Speaking after the meeting that lasted almost five and a half hour, UN Secretary General`s Special Advisor on Cyprus, Alexander Downer said that the leaders spent a fairly long amount of time today focusing on the issue of governance and power-sharing.

Leaders did discuss governance and power-sharing, and they will be meeting again on Friday (5 August) in a similar format. And well take up from where weve left off today and focus on governance and power-sharing, he said.

Downer reiterated that the UN consider that the less is said publicly about what happens in the discussions the more the chance is of having a degree of success in the negotiations.

These are very difficult negotiations, as we all know. We need to make sure that they are conducted in a way that maximizes the opportunity for reaching agreement. With that in mind we try to keep the contents of the discussion at this stage, during this intensive stage, as confidential as possible; thats a very important component of the process, he said.

He added that the substance is what ultimately matters, but having a good process is an important component of that.

Replying to a question whether Eroglu submitted any new proposals on the issue of governance and power-sharing, Downer said that its best for the purposes of the exercise not to go into the different proposals that the two sides make.

I think both sides should be able to talk around issues without any prejudice to their final positions. Theres been a good deal of discussion about those sorts of questions today. I think this is a work in progress and its important its understood to be a work in progress, he said.

[02] FAMAGUSTA - EVENTS

Famagusta Mayor Alexis Galanos has stressed that the purpose of this year`s anti-occupation events organized by the refugee Municipality is to send out a message of national unity to jointly address the problems the country is facing.

Speaking at a press conference, Galanos urged all the citizens of Famagusta and all those who believe that the Turkish occupation must end to take part in the events, which will take place at the Deryneia checkpoint and at the Cultural Center of the municipality, on Saturday, 6th of August.

The Mayor said that at the events, a minute`s silence will be observed in memory of those killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion and of the victims of the recent tragedy at the Naval Base ``Evangelos Florakis,`` in Mari, near Limassol.

[03] EUROSTAT - INDUSTRY

Cyprus and Romania were second to Latvia, which recorded a 1.3% increase.

The largest monthly decreases were recorded in Ireland (-1.2%), Denmark, Hungary and the Netherlands (-0.7% each).

Compared with June 2010 Cyprus industrial producer prices recorded an increase of 4.7%.

[04] AIRPORTS - PASSENGERS

In statements to the press, Cyprus airports Spokesman Adamos Aspris, said that there is a significant increase in the number of passengers at the two international airports of Cyprus, which also indicates an increase in tourism. He added that the Paphos International Airport recorded an increase in passengers of 9%, while the Larnaca International Airport recorded an increase of 5%.

New destinations like Saint Petersburg, Barcelona and regional airports of Britain like Manchester and Gatwick showed an increase of 20%.

Aspris said that more than a million passengers are expected to use the two Cypriot airports in August. The number of aircraft using the two airports will rise to 175 daily.
