[01] COMMUNITY LEADERS - INTENSIVE TALKSPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu meet on Friday, in the framework of UN-led direct negotiations aiming to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem.The meeting is the second of a series of all-day meetings to take place over the next several weeks. The first meeting took place on Monday and lasted over four hours. In statements that followed Mondays meeting, UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Liza Buttenheim said that it was one of the four meetings devoted to governance and power sharing, adding that ``core issues under this chapter will continue at the next leaders meeting on Friday July 29``. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks aim at a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof. President Christofias and Eroglu met UN SG Ban Ki-moon in Geneva, on July 7th, and according to Ban`s statement after the meeting, they agreed to enter into an intensive period of negotiations on the core issues of the Cyprus problem, to achieve convergences before meeting again in New York, in October. [02] GREEK PM - CYPRUS PROBLEMGreek Prime Minister George Papandreou has reaffirmed the Greek governments steady support for a Cyprus solution.Addressing a seminar for Greek Ambassadors, on Thursday, Papandreou said Greece remains a steady supporter of the Republic of Cyprus in an effort to find a just, viable and functional solution, on the basis of UN resolutions and the acquis communautaire. Commenting on recent statements by Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan on Cyprus, Papandreou expressed his support to the Cypriot government. We condemn all kinds of blackmailing practices that follow the logic of an ultimatum, and any attempt to link the political problem of Cyprus to the performance of its institutional functions, to which Cyprus is entitled as a member state of the EU Papandreou said. [03] ARCHBISHOP - AMMAN - MEETINGArchbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II will leave Sunday for Amman, Jordan, at the invitation of the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theofilos, to attend the Middle East Council of Churches Meeting to be held at the Jordanian capital on August 1-2.A press release, issued by the Archbishopric, said that during his stay there, the Archbishop will have meetings with Jordanian officials [04] DEFENCE MINISTER - SPECIAL COMMISSION - AMMUNITIONDefence Minister Demetris Eliades has set up a Special Commission to inspect all National Guard areas, where fuel and ammunition is stored.The decision comes in the wake of a massive munitions explosion at Evaggelos Florakis naval base, which killed 13 people and injured dozens, and destroyed the islands main power plant. According to an official announcement, the Commissions main task is to ensure that all storage rules and security measures are observed and that storage areas meet safety requirements.
