Cypriot-born filmmaker Michalis Kakogiannis passed away on Monday in Athens at the age of 89.

Kakogiannis, best known for his 1964 film ``Zorba the Greek``, died in the morning hours in an Athens hospital.

Born in the coastal town of Limassol on June 11, 1922, Kakogiannis studied law and drama in London. He worked as an actor but became world famous as a filmmaker.

Zorba The Greek was his most famous work, garnering three Oscar nominations (best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay) for the adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis book about Alexis Zorbas, played by Anthony Quinn.

In 1962 he won the Grand Jury Prize and the Technical Award for his film ``Elektra`` at the Cannes Film Festival.

``Stella`` with actress Melina Merkouri won in 1956 the best foreign language film at the Golden Globes. A year later, in 1957 Kakogiannis was awarded at the Golden Globes with the best foreign language film for ``A Girl in Black``.

President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias expressed in a message, his condolences to the family of Kakogiannis, noting that the Cypriot filmmakers work is a bright example and an inspiration to all.
