  • [01] GOVERNMENT - PARTIES - FISCAL MEASURES

Government and political leaders agreed on Friday on a package of measures, aiming at Cyprus financial consolidation, while discussion on a second package concerning immediate measures will be continued between the Ministry of Finance and political parties.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, announced the decision, following Fridays meeting between the President of the Republic and political leaders, without going into details on the measures.

On July 1, the government met with co-governing parties AKEL and DIKO, agreeing on a core of measures, which were later enriched by proposals submitted by other political parties. Moreover, a second meeting on the economy took place on July 18, with the government and political party representatives agreeing on appointing a technical committee, under the Finance Minister, to elaborate on proposals for the overall financial package.

Stephanou noted that the measures agreed aim both at structural problems as well as fiscal consolidation. He said however, that discussion on a second package will continue.

[02] EU COMMISSIONER - SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Cypriot Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis and EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn visited the Larnaca-Famagusta solid waste management plant, which has been co-funded by the EU and the Republic of Cyprus. Hahn was briefed on the operation of the plant and future plants to use waste to produce energy.

Sylikiotis said the plant was the first of its kind in Cyprus and was quite modern regarding the management, collection and recycling of materials to produce compost.

He added that he briefed Hahn on Cyprus` strategy for household solid waste management, and that the aim was to complete the other plants in Nicosia and Limassol, to produce compost, which will be used to produce energy.

Hahn said the plant ``is definitely a project which is state-of-the-art, but there is still something to do.`` ``There is certainly a concept concerning the waste treatment in Cyprus and I think the next important step is first to have an idea how the next financial period the money could be spent. I have to say that during this period particular the environmental budget is very well used and spent here in Cyprus above the European average,`` Hahn said, adding that it was important to use the waste for the production of electricity.
