  • [01] PRESIDENT - PARTY LEADERS - MEETINGS

National Council is holding a meeting on Monday at 10.00 (7.00 GMT), following the tragic incident at Evaggelos Florakis Naval Base, on July 11th, that caused the death of 13 people and the destruction of the countrys largest power station at Vassilikon. The Council will be chaired by the President of the Republic, Demetris Christofias.

The NC will focus on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, in the light of the recent meeting in Geneva between UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon and the leaders of the two communities.

Another meeting between the President and the party leaders will be held in the afternoon at 17.00 (14.00 GMT) expected to deal with the issue of economy and seek for structural measures, needed to be taken urgently.

Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas and National Guard Chief of Staff Petros Tsalikides resigned after the incident caused by the explosion of munitions in storage which Cyprus had confiscated from the Monchegorsk, a vessel sailing from Iran to Syria in 2009.

[02] GREEK DEFENCE MINISTER - CYPRUS

Greek Minister of Defence Panayiotis Beglitis arrives in Cyprus on Monday for a three-day official visit, at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Demetris Eliades.

On Monday, Beglitis, accompanied by Eliades, will visit the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base, where munitions confiscated in 2009 exploded, killing 13 people.

They will also lay wreaths at the graves of navy officers, who were among the victims, and will visit the family of Navy Commander Andreas Ioannides, who died in the explosion.

Beglitis` official welcoming will be held at the National Guard General Staff, followed by talks between the two Ministers.

In the evening, Beglitis will attend an event organised by the Pancyprian Organisation of Relatives of Missing Persons and Undeclared Prisoners.

[03] SPOKESMAN - CYPRIOTS OF UK TURKISH INVASION

The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK staged a rally on Sunday in London to demand an end to Turkey`s military occupation of Cyprus` northern third, with Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, as the main speaker, expressing hope that the Turkish side would show goodwill and pave the way for a solution.

At the rally in Trafalgar Square, Stephanou also referred to the deadly explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base, the shock wave of which destroyed the island`s major power plant and caused extensive damage to nearby communities, noting that responsibilities must be taken and that ``in the mourning and pain, we all need to find the strength to work to address the problems, and we will.``

Stephanou referred to the 1974 coup and the Turkish invasion, and pointed out that efforts for a solution have stumbled on the intransigence and negative stance of Turkey.

``Our efforts for a solution must be based on principles and at the same time be realistic,`` he said, adding that the aim is to agree on a bizonal bicommunal federation, which the Greek Cypriot side is dedicated to.

He noted that progress in talks to reach a settlement has only touched some of the core issues of the problem, and that the Turkish side`s stance does not leave room for further progress.

Stephanou said that during the recent meeting in Geneva between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, the UN chief suggested the intensification of the talks, which President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias is willing to do in a constructive manner.

    [04] EAC ELECTRICITY

The provision of electricity from the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus began on Saturday at midnight local time, to cover part of the gap in power after the island`s main power station at Vassiliko was destroyed by the shock wave from the explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base.

Director of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) Christos Christodoulides told CNA that ``the connection was made after many efforts and things are running smoothly, we are receiving a load of around 20 MW.``

Christodoulides noted that the situation would be assessed and further moves would be decided.
