[01] MILITARY COUP ANNIVERSARY - DENOUNCEMENTCyprus pays tribute to all those who lost their lives defending the Republic during the 1974 military coup against the democratically-elected President of Cyprus.The military coup against the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios III, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, was followed five days later by the Turkish invasion, which resulted in the illegal occupation of 37 percent of the Republic`s territory and its de facto division. On Friday, at 08.20 local time, the very time the coup occured, sirens were heard. An official memorial service for those who lost their lives defending the Republic was held this morning at Saints Constantinos and Eleni Church in Nicosia, in the presence of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias. Minister of Agriculture and Defense, Demetris Eliades, delivered the eulogy. Wreaths were laid at the tombs of those killed during the coup, defending the Republic. At a special plenary session, due to take place at noon, local time, in the presence of President Christofias, the House of Representatives will condemn the coup and the Turkish invasion and pay tribute to the people who lost their lives during the most tragic events in the countrys recent history. A special event to condemn the crime against the Cyprus Republic will be held at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, 19 July 2011. The event was originally scheduled to take place tonight, however due to the tragic explosion last Monday at a naval base, it has been postponed. Political parties have issued press releases denouncing the coup and the Turkish invasion. [02] PRESIDENT - MESSAGE - BLASTPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias announced during a televised address to the nation, the appointment of a single-member inquiry committee, to investigate events which led to the deadly explosion in the Naval Base ``Evangelos Florakis``, on Monday.The Committee will be headed by lawyer Polis Polyviou and it will be charged with the task of investigating the causes of the incident, pointing to those who should be held accountable for the explosion. After conveying his personal and the government`s condolences to family members and relatives of the twelve blast victims, President Christofias assured that those who are responsible will be held accountable, ``from the lowest to the highest level``, and called the public to remain ``calm and sober``. President Christofias began his address, by saying that he was speaking to the people, during difficult times, while the victims of the Naval Base tragedy were still being buried. [03] CLINTON - CYPRUS ISSUE - TURKEYThe Cyprus issue will be among the issues the US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton will raise during her meeting with government officials in Turkey.Certainly, she will raise regional issues with Turkey, and theyll talk about Greece and Cyprus and about domestic developments in Turkey, as they always do. So that will definitely be a part of the conversation, a Senior State Department Official told reporters covering the US Secretary of State visit in Turkey. The Senior State Department Official was responding to a reporter, during the flight to Turkey, who asked whether he was aware of a nine-page letter the Hellenic American Institute sent to the Secretary of State outlining its demands, and whether Clinton was intended to raise any of those issues, among which the Cyprus problem and Turkish claims on the Aegean sea.
