The funerals of eight of the 12 victims who were killed when seized containers of gunpowder exploded on Monday, at the Naval Base Evaggelos Florakis, in Zygi, will be held today in Limassol and Larnaka.

The names of the deceased persons whose funerals will take place today are Captain Andreas Ioannides, Commander of the Navy, Commander Lambros Lambrou, Commander of the Naval Base, Warrant Officer Kleanthis Kleanthous, Firemen Vassilis Krokos, Panayiotis Theofilou, Adamos Adamou, Spyros Ttantis and Chief fireman Georgos Yiakoumi.

The funerals of those killed will be held at public expense.

Meanwhile, thousands of Cypriot citizens gathered Tuesday evening at the Eleftheria Square in down town Nicosia to pay tribute to the twelve men, who lost their lives during the massive explosions at the Naval Base ``Evaggelos Florakis`` near Limassol, on Monday.

The crowd lit a candle to the memory of the twelve victims as a token of support and sympathy to the victims` families and friends. According to the Police, around 3,000 gathered at the Square.

They also protested against the governments handling of the incident and demanded justice and punishment for those responsible for the tragedy.

People of all ages, holding banners that said Shame on you, Criminals, State: Killer of your children and Christofias resign, demanded the immediate prosecution of those responsible by the Attorney General.

    [02] BLAST - VILLAGES - DAMAGES

Damages reaching two million euros have been recorded in the residential areas of Larnaca and Limassol, as a result of the shock wave from Monday`s deadly explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Limassol, which also destroyed the island`s major power plant.

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said damages in residential areas reached 510,000 euros in the Larnaca District and 1,439,000 euros in the Limassol District, adding that available funds from his Ministry and the Civil Defence would be used to cover part of the costs for repairs. The rest, he said, would be approved by the Council of Ministers.

Sylikiotis pointed out that residents already repairing their homes would receive financial assistance from the state over the next few days, while others who suffered more serious damage, which needed assessment, would be given aid soon.

    [03] RUSSIA - BLAST - SOLIDARITY

Deputy President of the State Duma and Vice-Chairman of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Ivan Melnikov, has expressed solidarity with the people of Cyprus, after Monday`s deadly explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base near Limassol.

Melnikov said that in Cyprus ``there has been a tragic incident`` and expressed condolences to the families and relatives of the victims and a speedy recovery to all those injured.

He also expressed certainty that ``the leadership of the country, President Demetris Christofias and his Government will take all the necessary measure to address the consequences of this tragic incident.``

    [04] MINISTER - ENERGY - TOURISM

Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides assured on Wednesday that hotels will enjoy uninterrupted supply of electricity, in a bid to avoid damaging tourist arrivals after the huge blast in Naval Base Evaggelos Florakis that has put Cyprus` largest power station in Vasiliko out of action.

Paschalides met with Cypriot Hotel Associations, PASYXE and STEK in the presence of delegations from Cyprus Electricity Authority, Cyprus Energy Regulatory Regulating Authority and Transmission System Operator to discus the problems created to hotels as a result of electricity cuts throughout the island.

``We conveyed the decision to provide constant flow of electricity to the hotels and hotel units,`` Paschalides said in statements after the meeting, adding that hoteliers should preserve energy and use their own auxiliary generators as this is mandatory.

`` The effort is not to affect Cyprus` tourism in any way,`` Paschalides added, noting that ``tourism is of utmost importance for the economy especially in such difficult times,``
