    [02] KAMINARA - EU ISSUES - CYPRUS

A series of extremely important issues for the future of the EU will be finalised during Cyprus` EU Presidency, which will begin in July 2012, head of the European Commission`s Representation in Cyprus, Androulla Kaminara has stressed.

In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Kaminara said that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU would be of great importance for the country and the EU as well, as many issues, ``maybe the most important ones of the decade`` will have to be finalised.

``I have to stress that during the Cypriot EU Presidency, a series of very important issues for the European future, which are maybe the most important ones of the decade, like the multiannual financial framework will have to be finalised``, she stressed.

Asked which will be the main European issues Cyprus will have to deal with during its EU Presidency, Kaminara said that the most important is the multiannual financial framework, adding that there is a proposal that in 2012 the EU policy on immigration is finalised as well as a package of measures for the single market.

Kaminara stressed that apart from the issues that are on the agenda, each EU Presidency is faced with unexpected issues which occur during its six monthly rotating presidency.

    [03] OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE - CYPRUS

Research centers most commonly carry out a very specific mission, circumscribed by strict scientific standards, the interdisciplinary blending of knowledge, and a dedication to promote knowledge and innovation.

Often, their function is being driven by an urge to excel in their area of interest, a task that inevitably consumes all their devotion, leading inevitably to their distancing from the rest of the society.

However, scientific output may from time to time escape the narrow margins of the academic community, especially when it manages to produce practical applications that benefit society or the country at large.

One such case is the Oceanography Center at the University of Cyprus, whose role and mission are not widely known in Cyprus. The name of the center sounds odd, but it is consistent with the science it is committed to study.

The research center aims at oceanographic research, with emphasis on the area of the Eastern Mediterranean. Its goal is to constantly monitor the maritime area around Cyprus and especially Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while the center offers oceanographic forecasts through the internet, covering the whole of the Mediterranean Sea.

    [04] POACHING - CONFERENCE

The problem of illegal killing of wild birds still exists in Cyprus, despite considerable efforts by the state to terminate it, Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis said today.

He added that Cyprus will try to minimize the problem, while chairing the Presidency of the EU Council, during the second term of 2012.

Sylikiotis was speaking during a conference, in Larnaca, in the eastern coast of Cyprus, organised by the Council of Europe and the Republic of Cyprus.

He added that the problem of illegal killing of birds adds to the many other problems wild life is facing today. The government has the political will to move forward, towards the right direction, Sylikotis said, pledging to crack down any form of illegal activity.
