    British Minister of State responsible for European issues and NATO, David Lidington, will visit Cyprus from 27 to 29 June, a representative of the Foreign Office has confirmed.

    Lidington will hold a series of contacts and will give a press conference on June 28.

    [02] JUSTICE MINISTER INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE

    Since 2004 a total of 110 deaths have been recorded in Cyprus by the National Centre for Documentation and Information on Drug Use, Justice Minister Loukas Louka says in a message, marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on Sunday, 26 June.

    The Justice Minister underlines that drugs are regarded as one of the most serious global challenges of our time, adding that in recent years several surveys have been conducted demonstrating an upward trend in illicit drug use.

    Our aim is also the suppression of criminal activity related to drugs by strengthening international cooperation to combat smuggling, trafficking and supply of drugs internationally the Minister points out.

    In an announcement to mark the International Day against Drugs, the Information Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction Treatment (KENTHEA) notes that for the past three years the new psychoactive substances identified by Europol penetrating the European market, nearly double every year.

    [03] BRITISH MEP VISIT CYPRUS

    Member of the European Parliament Andrew Duff will pay a visit to Cyprus from June 29 until July 2, at the invitation of the Cyprus Member of the European Parliament Takis Hadjigeorgiou and President of the United Democrats Praxoula Antoniadou Kyriakou.

    According to a press release, issued by the office of the Cypriot MEP, the British Liberal Democrat MEP will visit Cyprus to be briefed on the course of the direct negotiation process and to express his support and encouragement to the efforts to solve Cyprus issue.

    During his stay in Cyprus, Duff will be received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and will meet representatives from all the political parties. He will also have meetings with Turkish Cypriots politicians.
