  • [01] PRESIDENT TALKS

President Demetris Christofias has expressed the belief that with goodwill and respect to the terms of a federation it is possible to achieve full convergence on issues relating to the police and international agreements, before a meeting in Geneva on July 7th between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

Speaking to the media on his return to the Presidential Palace following todays meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, President Christofias said they had a short meeting today because the Turkish Cypriot side commented on the proposals tabled by the Greek Cypriot side on issues concerning the international agreements a future federal Cyprus could clinch and on police matters.

He added that the Greek Cypriot side would receive these comments in writing in order to study them and go back to a new meeting after the advisors of the two leaders meet on Thursday in an attempt to reach convergence on these two issues.

The President said that for the Greek Cypriot side there were also some other pending issues relating to the executive power, which it would raise at the next meeting.

He noted that there is still enough time until the Geneva meeting to exchange some views both with the United Nations and Eroglu, if necessary.

Replying to a question, President Christofias reiterated that the goal remains to complete the discussion on these two issues and achieve an agreement before the meeting in Geneva.

To this end, he added, the Greek Cypriot side would study todays remarks by the Turkish Cypriot side on the two issues and come back to the next weeks meeting in an effort, if possible - not to create any false hopes - to reach full convergence on these issues.

This is the goal,`` he added.

``I sincerely believe,`` he continued, ``that with a little more good will and respect to the terms of a federation, we can come to a conclusion. This is my view and a request I made during the meeting.

Moreover, he said that the Greek Cypriot side did not want any surprises during the meeting in Geneva, adding that the Greek Cypriot side had called on the UN not to come with any surprises. UN-backed direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem began in September 2008. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] DOWNER LEADERS MEETING

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou continued here on Tuesday their discussion on governance and power sharing, but they also focused on the meeting with the UNSG which will take place in Geneva on July 7, UNSG Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said here today.

Speaking after the meeting between the two community leaders, which lasted less than an hour, Downer stressed that it was very constructive and added: the UN are pleased with the meeting which focused on preparing the meeting with the SG on 7th of July, to ensure that it will be a successful meeting.

Downer added that the representatives of the two leaders, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay, will meet again on Thursday, June 23 and they will probably have one more meeting next week, while President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader will meet again on Thursday 30 of June.
