    [04] CYPRUS - HIV/AIDS

Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Minas Hadjimichael has said that HIV/AIDS affects 0.1% of the population in Cyprus, which therefore is classified among the countries with the lowest disease rate.

Addressing the UN General Assembly High Level meeting on AIDS, Hadjimichael noted that since 1986 that the disease first appeared in Cyprus, the Cyprus government has set this issue among its highest priorities and has since then preparing action plans against the disease which it regularly renews and adjusts, based on the new knowledge, experiences and technological developments .

Hadjimichael stressed that the prevention of HIV infection and protection of human rights constitute the cornerstone of Cyprus new strategic plan 2010-2014. He added that free treatment, care and voluntary counseling are offered to all citizens of the Republic and European citizens as well as to political refugees. He noted that the government continues to strictly monitor the situation and study the factors that are closely associated with the virus, such as trafficking and drug use and movement from and to Cyprus and across the dividing line.
