[01] PRESIDENT - PEACE TALKS - GENEVA MEETINGPresident Demetris Christofias hopes that in view of next months meeting with the UN Secretary-General, reasonable proposals will be put forward in the coming month, to help make headway towards a political settlement in Cyprus prior to the meeting, the third between the UN chief and the leaders of the islands two communities.Receiving the credentials of the first Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Cyprus Walid Hasan, Christofias assured of his continuous good faith and of realistic and reasonable proposals on his part with a view to achieve further progress. We hope that the same good faith will be demonstrated by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots,`` he said. ``To achieve this, Turkey has to stop its theoretical declarations in favour of a solution and in support of the talks and demonstrate in deeds, not in mere words, its political will. Ankara has to implement its obligations vis-a-vis the Republic of Cyprus and the EU, including its obligation to actively support the efforts to achieve a solution,`` Christofias said. [02] SPANISH AMBASSADOR - CYPRUS PROBLEMSpain will continue to maintain the same policy on Cyprus it has defended so far, the new Ambassador of Spain Ana Maria Salomon Perez, has said, as she presented her credentials to President Demetris Christofias.«The Spanish government gives full support and follows with great interest the current negotiations on the Cyprus problem and wishes that political will and open dialogue may bring about a fair and lasting agreement to achieve the reunification of the whole territory of Cyprus, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federal state, according to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the Ambassador said. ``Spain maintains and will maintain towards Cyprus and the Cypriot issue the same policy it has defended so far, she added. [03] EUROPEAN COMMISSION - CYPRUS - RECOMMENDATIONSThe European Commission has adopted 27 sets of country-specific recommendations plus one for the euro area as a whole to help member states gear up their economic and social policies to deliver on growth, jobs and public finances.In its recommendations to Cyprus, the Commission said that Cyprus should take action within the period 2011-2012 to adopt the necessary measures of a permanent nature to achieve the correction of the excessive deficit by 2012 and take measures to keep tight control over expenditure and make use of any better-than-expected budgetary developments for faster deficit and debt reduction. Cyprus is advised to ensure progress towards the Medium Term Objective by at least 0.5% of GDP annually, accelerate the phasing-in of an enforceable multiannual budgetary framework with a binding statutory basis and corrective mechanisms, as from the preparation of the 2012 Budget, as well as Programme and Performance Budgeting.
