[01] CYPRUS EC SINGLE MARKET
A European Commission Communication on the Single Market Act and the
twelve levers to boost growth and strengthen confidence was the main
issue discussed during the EU Competitiveness Council here Monday.
Cyprus was represented at the Council by Commerce, Industry and Tourism
Minister Antonis Paschalides.
Paschalides expressed his support to the Communication, underlining
that they need to focus particularly on initiatives related to social
cohesion, fundamental social rights, the support of small-medium
businesses as well as the modernization of these rules with regard to
public tenders, aiming at securing easier access for small-medium
businesses.
However Paschalides expressed skepticism as regards setting up a joint
unified tax basis for all businesses, noting that direct taxation
constitutes a national issue for each member state. He backed a
proposal by Greece and Portugal to include in the Councils conclusions
a reference regarding the decentralised regions, as these include
island regions.
