[01] PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS POLLING STATIONS CLOSEPolling stations in all districts in the southern government controlled areas of the Republic closed at 1830 local time (1530 GMT) for the parliamentary elections, in which a total of 531,136 persons were entitled to vote.Ten political parties and six independent candidates are contesting the elections. A total of 1,203 polling stations were set up throughout the government controlled areas of the Republic. A further two polling stations were set up for the enclaved persons (Greek Cypriots living in the northern Turkish occupied areas) and 17 for the election of the representatives of the three religious groups (Latins, Armenians and Maronites). Polling stations were also set up abroad, in the Greek cities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra as well as in London and Manchester in order to facilitate Cypriots who live there. A total of 2000 policemen are on duty to ensure everything runs smoothly. [02] PRESIDENT ELECTIONS STATEMENTPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has called on everyone to turn a page so that as of Monday the problems of Cyprus could be tackled jointly.Speaking after casting his vote in Sunday`s parliamentary elections, President Christofias said ``this day is special for Cyprus and its people, because it is the day democracy and the democratic institutions in our country are tried once again,`` and expressed certainty that ``democracy will be the victor.`` ``The most important possession people have gained in any country where a political culture has been established is democracy and democratic procedures,`` he said. He called on voters ``to exercise not their duty to vote but their obligation to do so,`` adding that ``it is the obligation of the citizens to express their opinion about who should handle the issues that concern them, be they either political or socioeconomic.`` President Christofias said ``the House of Representatives is a very important institution, one that directly expresses the sovereignty of the people of Cyprus.`` ``What I want to stress with emphasis is that as of tomorrow we must turn a page. We must see eye to eye who is really responsible for the inactivity in the Cyprus issue, to stop blaming ourselves,`` he said, adding that ``we must joint hands, discuss in depth our convergences and differences, and with pragmatism see how we can move forward.`` He added that ``there are approaches which are not the most pleasant, and in order to tackle them they must be tackled collectively, and this is the main message I want to send.`` Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
