  • [01] UNSG - LEADERS` MEETING - JULY 7

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon will host a joint meeting with President of Cyprus Republic, Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu on 7 July in Geneva, it was announced in New York early today.

According to a statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General and issued from UN Headquarters in New York early on Saturday morning, Cyprus time, this meeting follows his previous meetings with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus in New York on 18 November 2010 and in Geneva on 26 January 2011.

The Secretary-General has stressed with both leaders the need to accelerate their progress in order to achieve a mutually acceptable and lasting settlement on Cyprus as soon as possible. He expects the leaders to take advantage of this meeting, and the period leading up to it, to work jointly and concretely toward reaching that objective, it is added at the statement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Talks are currently underway between the leaders of the two communities to reunify the island.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - ELECTIONS - MESSAGE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias in a message in view of parliamentary elections to take place Sunday stresses that ``elections are the highest moment of democracy and citizens with their vote express freely their views and make their choices``.

Christofias describes the exercise of the right to vote as a guarantee for the smooth function of democracy and its institutions.

He also notes that the House of Representatives for the composition of which citizens are called to vote tomorrow is an institution of exceptional significance.

``I call on all to proceed to the ballot boxes and to exercise their sacred right of vote. Do not let others to decide for you``, says President Christofias in his message.

Let us prove in these elections, he adds, that our people show interest and actively participate in the political life and assert role and say in the present and the future of our homeland and our society.

Furthermore, President Christofias says in his message that the government and the competent state departments have worked intensively and systematically for many months to ensure smooth elections.

    [03] ELECTION SERVICE`S HEAD - POLL

The final results of Sunday`s parliamentary elections are expected to be announced by 2300 local time, with regard to the share of the vote each political party or coalition of parties or independent candidates secure, Head of the Election Service Demetris Demetriou has said.

The number of parliamentary seats per electoral district, as allocated in the first distribution of seats, is also expected to be announced before midnight Sunday.

Speaking to CNA, Demetriou said that ``there was sufficient compliance to the rules concerning the removal of party banners in all areas``.

The only messages we received, he added, were violations of the rules in Limassol, for banners in roads leading to villages.

He said that many people rushed today to apply for election booklets especially in Nicosia.
