[01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS ISSUEGovernment Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Thursday that demands to withdraw proposals in talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem are politically wrong and dangerous for the Greek Cypriot side, adding that it is also unheard of to hold referenda on separate provisions of a settlement.Stephanou noted that the Greek Cypriot side accepted the rotating presidency in 2002, and negotiated it from 2002 until 2004. ``The President of the Republic, finding these facts before him, submitted an improved proposal for the rotating presidency,`` Stephanou said. He also noted that ``the position for the immediate withdrawal of proposals is politically wrong and dangerous for the Greek Cypriot side`` and that ``such an action would expose our side to the international community and would provide a unique opportunity to the Turkish side to appear as willing for a solution.`` Stephanou pointed out that ``the negotiations are being held on the principle that nothing is considered agreed until everything is agreed,`` adding that ``the negotiations are an open and continuous process.`` Referring to positions concerning referenda, Stephanou said ``it is unheard of to hold referenda on separate provisions of a settlement.`` ``This position is practically unfeasible, leads to the reasoning of approving a solution in fragments and opposes the fundamental position of the Greek Cypriot side for the approval of a comprehensive solution at separate and simultaneous referenda, and indeed this proposed solution should be agreed on, should be the product of dialogue and not arbitration and pressing timetables,`` he said. [02] EU - GREEN ENERGYCyprus can achieve the EU target for the Renewable Source of Energy prior to 2020, Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has said.Speaking in the framework of the 3rd International Conference for the Renewable Sources of Energy, Paschalides said that he is optimistic that Cyprus will achieve the target of the EU by the year 2020, when 13% of the energy will come from renewable sources. We feel that we can achieve that target prior to 2020, he said. He also said that the Government has recently announced the national plans regarding the Renewable Sources of Energy, adding that the effort will continue in order to reach the EU target and help protect the environment. He added that, based on data, Cyprus has made huge steps in the field of the Renewable Sources of Energy and Green Power, noting that few years ago, Cyprus was in a bad level on that issue. [03] CYPRUS - EU - PORT CONTROLRight after the upcoming parliamentary elections on May 22, the House of Representatives will pass a new law in order to implement the new port state control regime to comply with European Union law, Minister of Communication and Works Erato Kozakou Marcoullis said on Thursday. The European Commission has asked Cyprus and other six member states on Thursday to adopt national legislation to implement the new port state control regime to comply with European Union law. The Commission`s request takes the form of a reasoned opinion under EU infringement procedures. If these Member States fail to inform the Commission within two months of the measures they have taken to ensure full compliance with EU law, the Commission could refer the case to the EU Court of Justice. [04] TOURISM - PROSPECTSThe estimates on tourist arrivals in Cyprus this season are very optimistic, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides said on Thursday, adding that stakeholders must show complacency.Paschalides` remarks came in the wake of the 43% increase in tourist arrivals in April 2011 compared with the corresponding period of 2010. The projections of our Ministry are very optimistic but the stakeholders should not be complacent and should do their duty, Paschalides said in statements on the sidelines of the 3rd international conference on Renewable Energy. Responding to questions, Paschalides referred to the development projects for the southern coastal city of Larnaca. Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
