  • [01] SPOKESMAN - ÅÅÆ - STATEMENT

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has described as ``unacceptable and dangerous`` remarks the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has reportedly made that he considers a cause of war the exploitation of Cyprus sub-sea natural resources by Greek Cypriots.

US company Noble Energy received in October 2008 a concession from the government of Cyprus to explore Block 12 for possible reserves of hydrocarbons, in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone, which borders reserve-rich Leviathan in Israels EEZ.

Invited to comment on statements attributed to Eroglu, published in Volkan newspaper, that war will break out, if the Cyprus government goes ahead with oil and natural gas exploration, the Spokesman said that if Eroglu has indeed made such statements, then these are truly unacceptable and dangerous. He stressed that the Republic of Cyprus has a sovereign right to manage its EEZ and any talk or threats have no place in such a sensitive issue.

The Spokesman added that the government is very careful and is silently working to safeguard its sovereign rights. We hope that Eroglu does not continue to maintain this very dangerous pattern of remarks which do not help and merely create problems, he added.

    [02] DESALINATION - PRODUCTION

The capacity of the production of water from desalination plants will reach 250 thousand cubic metres on a daily basis by 2012, said here Sunday Agricultural, Natural Resources and the Environment Minister Demetris Eliades.

In a press conference to present the work of his ministry during the three years in office of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, Eliades said that this capacity would be enough to cover the water supply of the population and the tourism industry.

Eliades said that in 2012, the construction of the Soleas Dam is expected to be completed, and is estimated to cost 18 million euro, with the capacity to hold 4.5 million cubic metres of water.

During the last three years, he said, the total subsidy of farmers reached 497.87 million euro with the amount of 187.8 million covered by European funding while the remaining amount of 310.07 came from national resources.

    [03] CYPRIOTS GREEK COMPAK

Cypriot shooting athletes returned from Greek Compak Sporting Rodos Grand Prix with one silver and one bronze medal, as well as numerous other distinctions.
