  • [01] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS ISSUE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias will continue negotiating for a solution of the Cyprus problem based on principles, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has stressed.

Speaking to journalists, Stephanou noted that President Christofias will continue showing the necessary realism so that a political solution is achieved in Cyprus, which would give an end to the illegal Turkish occupation.

``I have to stress that the President will continue negotiating and working for a solution of the Cyprus problem, defending principles and showing the necessary realism so that we can achieve a solution that would give an end to the illegal Turkish occupation of our country and would reunify our country and its people in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation``, he underlined.

The Spokesman called for unity in the domestic front, in order to better address Turkey`s policy and strategies.

He reiterated that the solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation is ``not the ideal one, it is compromising solution`` for the Greek Cypriot side.

Referring to Turkey`s efforts to upgrade the illegal state in the occupied north of the Republic of Cyprus, he said that this constitutes a continuation of its illegal actions since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

He recalled that the proclamation of the illegal state in the north has been unanimously condemned by the UN Security Council, which declared it legally invalid.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied one third of its territory.

UN resolution 541 (1983) adopted by the Security Council on 18 November 1983 considers the declaration by the Turkish Cypriot authorities issued on 15 November 1983 to create in independent state in northern Cyprus, as incompatible with the 1960 Treaty concerning the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus and the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee.

The UNSC, in its resolution deplores the declaration of the Turkish Cypriot authorities of the purported secession of part of the Republic of Cyprus, considers the declaration refereed to above as legally invalid and calls for its withdrawal.

It also calls upon all states to respect the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-alignment of the Republic of Cyprus and not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus.

    [02] CYPRUS - OTC CONFERENCE

Cyprus is among the three countries chosen to present, during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) which begins Monday in Houston, Texas, the opportunities they offer in offshore oil extraction and natural gas.

For this reason, the Director of Energy at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Solon Kassinis and the Director General of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, Stelios Stylianos, have traveled to Houston to introduce the prospects that Cyprus has.

The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is the worlds foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection. OTC is held annually at Reliant Center in Houston.

Each year, OTC attracts more than 65,000 attendees and 2,000 exhibiting companies representing more than 110 countries.

This years exhibition will be the largest conference in 29 years and will offer the latest tools and services from more than 2,500 companies across three distinct areas, Reliant Center, Reliant Arena, and the newly expanded outdoor area, the OTC Parkway.
