  • [01] EU INTERIOR MINISTERS - IMMIGRATION

A Ministerial meeting will take place next week in Cyprus with the participation of EU Ministers from the six Mediterranean states, which are faced with disproportionate mass immigration flows. EU Ministers from Cyprus, Greece, Malta, France, Spain and Italy, responsible for immigration issues, will gather in Nicosia on April 19th, at the invitation of the Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis.

The Nicosia meeting will focus on the situation in North Africa and the Middle East and immigration flows which exert disproportionate pressure on the six EU Mediterranean countries.

According to an official press release, the meeting will discuss the need for a comprehensive management of immigration flows in the EU framework, based on the principle of solidarity among EU member states. During the meeting, the Ministers will put forward common proposals in a Joint Communique, which will then be submitted to the next EU Council of Justice and Interior Ministers.

    [02] PRESIDENT CYPRUS WINE COMPETITION

The annual Cyprus Wine Competition sends a message of optimism that local wine production can actually find its place high on the world wine map, President Demetris Christofias has said.

Addressing Saturday evening a gala dinner organized to mark the 6th Cyprus Wine Competition, in the southern coastal town of Limassol, President Christofias said that the wine-making sector in Cyprus is going through a transitional period, having to adjust to new circumstances, but noted that any problems faced in the wine industry are being dealt with.

President Christofias said that serious efforts are being made, through long lasting strategies, to resolve any problems that could hinder the evolution of a healthy and sustainable wine making sector.

Addressing the 6th Cyprus Wine Competition event, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Enviroment, Demetris Eliades, said the government has a strategy which aims to upgrade the quality and enhance the competitiveness of the wine sector to the best benefit of the economy, the wine producers and the consumers.
