  • [01] FRANCE-CYPRUS FRIENDSHIP GROUP - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Chairman of the France-Cyprus Friendship Group in the French Senate Marc Massion said on Tuesday that in order to achieve a solution of the Cyprus problem, it was necessary for both sides to show the necessary will.

Speaking through an interpreter after a meeting at the House of Representatives in Nicosia with the Chairman and the members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Massion expressed the Group`s support to the struggle of the Cypriots for territorial integrity.

``We know the situation is difficult and complex,`` he said, adding that the Group was in favour of the talks for a settlement and supported the people of Cyprus in their efforts for peace and the reunification of the island.

Massion pointed out that, in order to achieve a solution of the Cyprus problem, it was necessary for both sides to show will, adding that ``this will is lacking in one of the two sides.``

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks between the island`s two communities are underway to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country.

[02] UN REPRESENTATIVE - SEMINAR ON ILLEGAL DRUGS

Illegal drug use has ``a devastating effect on individuals, families and on communities,`` the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim has said, and expressed confidence that a bicommunal event organised on Tuesday would ``shed light on the many issues that surround illegal drug use and serve as another excellent example of the cooperation between the two communities on law enforcement that seeks to ensure the safety and welfare of all Cypriots.``

Addressing a seminar in Nicosia, organised by the Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters under UN auspices, titled ``Illegal Drugs: Issues, Concerns and Future Directions with the Emphasis on Prevention``, Buttenheim said that ``the topic is an important one which touches us all.``
