    UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will soon have phone contacts with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in Cyprus Dervis Eroglu, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq has said.

    The Spokesperson said during a briefing on Friday, that the Secretary-General did have phone calls recently with the Cypriot leaders, answering to a question by a Turk journalist. He later corrected the statement saying that no phone calls have taken place in the past few days.

    Explaining the mistake, the UN official said that the communication with the leaders had been scheduled for yesterday, but for some reason the Secretary-General, located in Nigeria, had not called them.

    [02] FOREIGN MINISTER EGYPT

    Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou departed on Saturday night for Egypt, on a two-day visit on 3-4 April.

    According to an official announcement, Kyprianou will be received by the Prime Minister of Egypt Essam Sharaf, while he will also hold a meeting with new Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Abdalla El-Araby.

    Kyprianou will discuss with his new Egyptian counterpart the developments in the Arab world, bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt, EU-Egypt relations and issues related to the Union for the Mediterranean.

    During his visit, Kyprianou will hold separate meetings with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa.

    [03] TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON CRIME SEMINAR - ILLEGAL DRUGS

    ิhe United Nations-supported Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters (TCCCM) will hold next Tuesday a seminar at Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia, addressing the use and prevention of illegal drugs in Cyprus. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and is open to the media.

    The half-day seminar Illegal Drugs: Issues, Concerns and Future Directions with the Emphasis on Prevention - will bring together participants from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities and the United Nations who will address the causes of taking illegal drugs, the legal sanctions for those caught with them, and the consequences for families as a result of illegal drug abuse in the home. The discussion will also focus on preventative measures to combat illegal drug use.

    The Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Cyprus, Lisa M. Buttenheim, will deliver opening remarks, as will the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot team leaders of the TCCCM, Andros Kapardis and Hakki Onen. The seminar will be chaired by UNFICYP Senior Police Adviser Chief Superintendant John Farrelly. Experts from both communities and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force will also address the forum speaking on a number of issues including contributing factors to illegal drug use and approaches to prevention.

    Without a doubt, illegal drug use has a devastating effect on individuals, on families and on communities, remarked Buttenheim, according to a press release.

    [04] GREEK PARLIAMENT DELEGATION - VISIT

    A six-member delegation of the Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament pays a visit in Cyprus, at the invitation of the Chairmen of Parliamentary Committees on Defence and Foreign Affairs, Yiannakis Omirou and Averof Neophytou.

    During its stay in Cyprus, the delegation will be received by President Demetris Christofias, House President Marios Garoyian and Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II.

    They will also have a joint meeting with the Presidents of the Parliamentary Committees on Defence and Foreign Affairs Yiannakis Omirou and Averof Neophytou, as well as members of the two committees. The delegation will hold separate meetings with Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou and Defence Minister Kostas Papakostas.
