  • [01] CYPRUS PEACE TALKS - NEW MEETING

    The President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu meet Friday, in the framework of direct negotiations for solution of the Cyprus problem.

    The meeting will take place at the Chief of Missions residence, in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

    Speaking after the last meeting of the two leaders on Thursday February 17, UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim said that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus confirmed the progress achieved in the last two meetings of the representatives on economy and EU matters.

    She also said that the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer will be present at Fridays meeting.

    Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, are currently engaged in UN-led negotiations, with an aim to reunify the island, under a federal roof.

    [02] EU - COMMISSIONER - VISIT TO CYPRUS

    European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva will hold a series of meetings during her two-day visit in Cyprus, on February 25 and 26.

    Georgieva will meet the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou and the Minister of Interior Neoklis Sylikiotis.

    Moreover, Georgieva will meet members of the Parliamentary Committees on External Affairs and European Affairs, as well as with NGOs that are active in the field of humanitarian issues. Georgieva will also visit the Center of Cultural Protection in Larnaka, the announcement concludes.

    [03] INTERIOR MINISTER - IMMIGRATION

    Cyprus Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has attended a meeting with his counterparts from the EU Mediterranean member-states of France, Spain, Greece, Malta and Italy, in Rome, to discuss the situation stemming from the increased immigration flows as a result of the upheaval in countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

    The Ministers of the six EU - Mediterranean countries adopted a joint declaration which will be submitted in the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, to convene in Brussels. ``The ongoing events in Northern Africa represent deep and dramatic social and institutional changes, which cause profound concern about the possible effects on our countries and on the entire European Union,`` the communique says.

    In his intervention, the Cypriot Minister noted that the EU member states should coordinate efforts to tackle illegal immigration flows, but by taking into consideration the humanitarian aspect of those in need.

    [04] EXCAVATIONS - SITES COMPLETED

    The Department of Antiquities has announced the completion of excavations at the site of Katalymmata ton Plakoton at Akrotiri ton Gaton and excavations conducted in the periphery of the Middle Byzantine church of Panayia tou Kampou Choirokiti. The excavations at Katalymmata ton Plakoton, of the Akrotiri peninsula, were held under the directions of the Senior Archaeological officer of the Department, Dr Eleni Procopiou.

    During this season the excavation uncovered one more three aisled branch to the east of the peculiar narthex-martyrion which is excavated since 2007, forming a T shape plan. It has a width of 36 m on N-S axis and a total length of 29 m without the protruding to the west apse. It is connected with the central nave, the plan of which is not yet determined, through three openings, the tribelon, to the east end of the three aisled eastern branch.

    Along the south side of that branch adjacent rooms were uncovered, whereas to the north side it is extended without any division a long hall (catechoumenon) and a portico with raw of piers. The date of the erection has been determined at the end of the first decade of the reign of emperor Heraclius (616-619 A.D.), whereas its abandonement and destruction happened slightly before the middle of the 7th century.
