Cyprus is ready to support democratically elected governments which may arise from the crisis in different countries in the Arab Gulf and the Middle East, Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou has said. He also said that Cyprus must not be regarded as interfering in the internal affairs of these countries, since this would only have a negative fallout.

We are ready to cooperate with them, irrespective of the outcome, the Minister said at Larnaca Airport, on departure for Brussels to attend the EU General Affairs Council.

Kyprianou highlighted the importance of tonights extraordinary meeting of EU FMs to discuss exclusively developments in Egypt and Tunisia, noting that the crisis is also spreading to other states such as Libya, Algeria and in the states of the Gulf.

This is particularly important for Cyprus, being in the area, and we would like to be actively involved in shaping EU policy. My recent visits to the countries of the region will help us analyse the situation and outline our views, as Europeans, but also to explain how our neighbours see the situation, the Minister said.

Kypranou said that his meetings in Israel, earlier this week, would contribute to a better analysis of the situation, given that Israel will be affected by developments in this area.

Replying to questions, the FM indicated that any instability or uncertainty is worrisome.

What is important is to see where this process will lead to. We believe it should lead to a free exercise of democratic rights of the citizens in these countries and result in a democratically elected government, he added.

This, he pointed out, is the objective and Europe must be ready to support it.

We must also be prepared, irrespective of the outcome and provided that democratic processes are adhered to, to accept it and continue our cooperation with these countries, he said.

Cyprus, he noted, believes that acceptance of the democratic processes must not depend on whether the outcome of such processes is to our liking or not.

The people of these countries will speak out. We are ready to support them, one must not consider that we are interfering or intervening in their internal affairs as such an approach will only have negative repercussions, he concluded.

    [02] FM - TRAVEL ADVICE
