  • [01] GREEK FM INTERVIEW

Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Demetris Droutsas criticised the stance of Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu in the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement, saying that his approach is reminiscent of past ages and ideas and does not reflect the basis of negotiations, the way it has been circumscribed.

Moreover, he reiterated his call to the United Nations to maintain an objective stance.

In an exclusive interview to London Greek Radio, Droutsas noted that President Christofias proved throughout this period, since the commencement of talks, that he is able to present constructive positions and proposals.

Referring to his meeting with Foreign Secretary William Hague, Droutsas said that he stressed to him the expectation of the Greek side for the United Nations to maintain an objective stance, without simplifications.

[02] PERMANENT SECRETARY OF FM NEW YORK

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nicos Emiliou is in New York after completing his meetings in Washington with the aim to convey the message that Cyprus is prepared for a solution of the Cyprus problem that is based on principles.

On Friday, Ambassador Emiliou will lunch with B. Lynn Pascoe, UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs. He will also have meetings with the UN Permanent Representatives of France, the UK and China, and will be received by Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in America Demetrios.

The Cypriot Federation of America and PSEKA hosted a dinner in Emilious honour on Thursday evening, which was attended by presidents and members of Cypriot associations and organisations, members of the diaspora press and the diplomatic mission in New York.

PSEKA chairman Philip Christopher and Panicos Papanicolaou, chairman of the Cypriot Federation of America, welcomed Emiliou and thanked him for the excellent cooperation overseas Cypriots have with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In their speeches, they referred to the common struggle of Cyprus and the overseas Cypriots to end the Turkish occupation and reunite Cyprus.

Cyprus Ambassador in Washington Pavlos Anastasiades, addressing Emiliou, referred to the number of contacts the Permanent Secretary had in Washington that aimed at informing the US administration on the course of the negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.

    [03] NGOs CYPRUS CIVICUS

The prospects and potential for a positive contribution of Civil Society in the Greek Cypriot community appear stronger in the past six years, according to a CIVICUS report, the World Alliance for Citizen Participation, in which Cyprus participates.

The report, presented on Thursday, notes that there has been an improvement in the dynamic of NGOs in public affairs, compared to 2005, when a similar poll was conducted. The viability prospects and cooperation of NGOs as well as their participation in decision taking have improved, reaching 77.1% of the capabilities of these organizations.

This is expected to lead to a mass participation of citizens in the public affairs of the Greek Cypriot community and in civil society organizations.

At present, the participation of citizens in NGOs reaches only 5% while the majority, 97.5% of the public states that it does not participate in any voluntary social work.
