The prospects and potential for a positive contribution of Civil Society in the Greek Cypriot community appear stronger in the past six years, according to a CIVICUS report, the World Alliance for Citizen Participation, in which Cyprus participates.

The report, presented on Thursday, notes that there has been an improvement in the dynamic of NGOs in public affairs, compared to 2005, when a similar poll was conducted. The viability prospects and cooperation of NGOs as well as their participation in decision taking have improved, reaching 77.1% of the capabilities of these organizations.

This is expected to lead to a mass participation of citizens in the public affairs of the Greek Cypriot community and in civil society organizations.

At present, the participation of citizens in NGOs reaches only 5% while the majority, 97.5% of the public states that it does not participate in any voluntary social work.
