  • [01] AGRICULTURE MINISTER - EU - HALLOUMI

The European Commission is expected to take its final decision on the registration of halloumi cheese as a product with Protected Appellation of Origin by the end of 2013, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Demetris Eliades said on Friday.

Speaking during a press conference in Nicosia, Eliades said that his Ministry already asked the Commission to grant a five-year transition period, until 2018, in order to give time to Cypriot businesses to adjust to the rules of the new Regulation.

The Minister said that, during the transition period, the production of halloumi containing up to 80% of cow milk will be allowed.

Eliades also noted that the Ministry sent to the European Commission a folder, prepared by a Technical Committee, containing answers to technical and legal issues on halloumi cheese, in a factual and persuasive manner, for the registration request to be reviewed.

In case of rejection of the application, the Minister noted that the consequences for Cypriot production of halloumi cheese would be severe, adding that the well-documented handling of the application is the only way to register halloumi as a Cypriot product in the EU.

    [02] PROPERTY - REFORMS

Legislative reforms in the realm of permission-granting for constructions and issuing of property deeds aim at serving the buyers and giving solutions to all property owners, Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said on Friday.

Speaking during a press conference, Sylikiotis noted that the five relevant legislative proposals by the Ministry aim at protecting buyers and giving a permanent solution for the monitoring of development, securing it from untrustworthy practices of the past.

Sylikiotis added that a series of mistakes, infringements and omissions in the past resulted in the victimisation of buyers in many ways and had a negative impact on the countrys name abroad.

He said that the legislative proposals that have been forwarded to the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs provide safety clauses to the buyers and give them the opportunity to take judicial recourse, in order to oblige the seller to transfer the property bought.

    [03] TEPAK - SCIENCE - PROGRAMME

The European programme CoReflect, the first FP7 research project to be coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK), is due to be completed this month, an announcement by TEPAK says.

The programme, which is funded by the European Commission, began in March 2008, having as its main objective the encouragement of students interest in, and understanding of, socio-scientific issues that preoccupy modern societies through inquiry-based learning.

For this purpose, the announcement adds, Local Working Groups in each country have developed multi-modal, web-based learning environments on the Stochasmos platform, a web-based learning and teaching platform designed in Cyprus.

It is added that the third Knowledge Sharing Workshop of the European research and development project took place between January 5 and 8, at the University of Reading, England. The final face-to-face meeting of the CoReflect Steering Board took place on January 9th, 2011.

    [04] LIMASSOL - MARATHON

Runners from all over the world will compete in the 5th Limassol Marathon, held on February 20th, along the sea front road of Limassol.

As the organisers of the Marathon aim to establish it as one of the most popular in Europe, in recent years the Marathon has been included in the official calendar of international federations AIMS and IAAF. This year, the participants are expected to exceed one thousand.

At a press conference on Friday, Limassol Mayor Andreas Christou welcomed the 5th International Marathon, saying that it creates huge opportunities to attract sports tourism and to create conditions for an increased tourist wave in times of recession.

The Marathon day includes the Marathon, a Half Marathon, Atlantica Limassol 10 km Race, 5 km Corporate Race, 1 km Charity Walk / Run and 1 km Kids Fun Run.
