  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - MEETING

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue, convenes here today under President Demetris Christofias to discuss developments in the Cyprus problem.

The Council meets in view of the President`s meeting in Geneva on January 26 with UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

Later this afternoon President Christofias will meet with the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot community have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

President Christofias and Eroglu will have their last scheduled meeting in the framework of direct negotiations, on Friday, prior to the Geneva meeting.

President Christofias and Eroglu met with the UNSG on November 18 in New York.

The last meeting between the two leaders was held on January 12.

UN Secretary General has expressed hope that during his meeting in Geneva with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, much more progress will be made in addressing core issues of the Cyprus problem, including property and security issues.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Talks between President Christofias and Eroglu aim to reunify the island under a federal roof.

The National Council comprises the leaders and representatives of all six parliamentary parties to discuss with the President development in the question of Cyprus. The President is not bound by any decision the Council takes.
