    President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan arrived on Monday in Cyprus for an official visit. Armenias President and his spouse were welcomed at the Presidential Palace by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the first lady Elsi Christofia.

    Sargsyan inspected the Guard of Honour and laid a wreath at the statue of the late President of the Republic of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios III.

    President Christofias and his Armenias counterpart with their wives had a tete-a-tete meeting, during which they exchanged presents.

    President Christofias, speaking in Russian, expressed his satisfaction over the outcome of his visit to Armenia, and wished Sargsyans visit in Cyprus to be constructive.

    Sargsyan thanked President Christofias for the hospitality and noted that the two countries share common interests and common history.

    Prior to the official talks of the two delegations the two Presidents made brief statements.

    President Christofias referred to the common bonds between the two countries, noting that the people of Cyprus and Armenia retain a brother-like relationship. He added that the Armenians constitute a very creative part of the Cyprus society.

    President Sargsyan said that the agreements, which will be signed on Monday, are the continuation of the talks the two Presidents had in Yerevan. He added that the relations between Cyprus and Armenia can be upgraded in many fields such as Education, Culture, Agriculture and

    President of the Republic Demetris Christofias indicated here today the economic and trade relations between Cyprus and Armenia could become closer and better to the mutual benefit of the two countries.

    Addressing today in Nicosia the Business Forum Prospects for Economic Co-operation between Cyprus and Armenia, hosted at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the occasion of Armenias President Serzh Sargsyan to Cyprus, President Christofias underlined that as Cyprus is gradually turning into a vital economic link between the European Union and the countries of the Middle East, Asia and North Africa, Armenian companies will be able to expand more effectively into the European Union and Middle East markets in co-operation with Cypriot companies.

    President Christofias noted that despite the fact that the trade and economic relations between Armenia and Cyprus are for the time being very limited, however, the appropriate preconditions exist for them to become closer and better, to the mutual benefit.

    He also expressed the certainty that today`s business forum will give a new impetus to the development of trade and economic relations between Cyprus and Armenia and will offer a new opportunity for meeting today`s economic challenges together, by exploiting to the greatest possible degree the opportunities offered by the markets of the European Union, the Middle East and the Caucasian countries.
