  • [01] CYPRUS FM EGYPT VISIT

Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou will pay Egypt a visit between 14-16 January.

According to an official announcement, in Cairo Kyprianou will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit, with whom they will discuss bilateral relations, relations between the European Union and Egypt, the Middle East peace process and the Cyprus problem.

During his visit, the Foreign Minister will also have separate meetings with the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodoros II, the Grand Imam Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Bishop Moussa of the Coptic Church, as well as the Presiding Boards of the Hellenic Community and the Cyprus Brotherhood of Cairo.

    [02] GREEK FM CYPRUS TURKEY

Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras has stressed that Turkey cannot become a full EU member state unless the Cyprus problem is solved.

If we are to have a relation with Turkey that would lead its full EU membership, then we must talk clearly, he said Thursday in statements to the press, adding that the most important issue in Turkeys EU course is the solution of the Cyprus problem.

This problem must be resolved, Delavekouras pointed out, saying that Turkey cannot become a member of the EU without a prior solution of the Cyprus problem and the termination of its occupation in Cyprus.

Reiterating Greeces proposal for a meeting to be convened in which the EU Turkey relations would be reassessed, he said in that meeting EU member states and Turkey should renew their commitment to Turkeys full EU membership, which of course provides for the fulfillment of its obligations.

    [03] CNA RECEPTION NEW YEAR

The government and the House of Representatives pledged their continuous support to the Cyprus News Agency, saying the Agency is fulfilling its objectives. The Cyprus News Agency hosted a reception Thursday to usher in the new year, which was attended by members of the House President, the Government Spokesman, members of the Cabinet, MPs, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the CNA Board of Directors, CNA Acting Director and other guests.

Chairman of the CNA Board of Directors Costakis Constantinou said that ``in 2011 CNA celebrates 35 years and the aim is to further upgrade its services quantitatively and qualitatively, and extend free access to news bulletins to all citizens, because information is a significant source of knowledge.``

He noted that in 2010, CNA has filed a total of 46,000 news stories in Greek, 4,000 in English and 3,500 in Turkish as well as more than 5,000 photographs. He also referred to the WAP service that CNA has introduced in cooperation with the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority.
