[01] DOWNER - LEADERS` MEETING WITH UNSGUN Secretary General Ban Ki moon will ask the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to maintain the momentum at the UN led Cyprus talks, and to chart a path forward, his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, has said.In statements to the press following Tuesdays meeting between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, Downer referred to the upcoming meeting between the UNSG and the leaders of Cyprus in Geneva, to take place on the 26th of January. Asked what the UN expect from the Geneva meeting, he said two things can come out of this meeting one is that the leaders will be able to report on the progress theyve been making in the negotiations since they last met with the Secretary-General on November the 18th, and secondly, that the leaders will be able to chart a path forward from the 26th of January. Asked about the practical plan which the UNSG has asked the two sides to prepare so as to overcome their differences, Downer said that the Secretary-General asked them, to continue with the negotiations to identify the core issues that still need to be resolved. [02] STEPHANOU - MERKEL - VISITThe visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Cyprus and the statements she made on Cyprus issue prove that President Christofias policy, initiatives and efforts to solve Cyprus problem, are recognized and appreciated in Europe and internationally, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.Speaking here Wednesday, Stephanou stressed that President Christofias policy, which is realistic and is based on principles, persuades the international community that the Greek Cypriot side wishes a solution and that it constructively works towards the finding of that solution. In addition, Stephanou noted that Christofias policy unfolds the protracting stance of the Turkish side, which should harmonized with the agreed solution basis, the UN resolution on Cyprus, the principles of the international and European law, in order to pave the way for a solution. Stephanou pointed out that Cyprus President Demetris Christofias will continue, with consistency and determination, to work for a solution, by undertaking initiatives, putting forward proposals and by utilizing, in and outside the framework of the EU, which is created by the multilevel international policy of the government. [03] BALEARIC ISLANDS PARLIAMENT SPEAKER - CYPRUS PROBLEMBalearic Islands Parliament Speaker Aina Rado i Ferrando has said that Spain and the Balearic Islands want a settlement of the Cyprus problem that will be facilitate the peaceful co-existence of the people of Cyprus the soonest possible.Rado i Ferrando who is currently visiting Cyprus said that there is an unprecedented situation on the island, adding that her country wants to contribute to efforts for a Cyprus settlement, especially in the framework of its participation in the EU. Rado i Ferrando met on Wednesday House President Marios Garoyian who informed her about the current situation of the Cyprus problem, expressing his disappointment for the lack of progress due to the intransigent stance of the Turkish side, which exerts full control on the Turkish Cypriot community. Garoyian also reiterated the Greek Cypriot sides will and desire to reach a just, functional and viable settlement that will reunite Cyprus and its people.
