  • [01] PRESIDENT - DAVUDOGLU - REMARKS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said on Wednesday that Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Davudoglu was not justified to be so cynical and arrogant in saying that the Republic of Cyprus` agreement with Israel for the delimitation of the exclusive economic zone was void.

Commenting on remarks by Davudoglu, President Christofias said that, ``according to international law, the presence of the Turkish army in Cyprus is void and illegal`` and that the Turkish Minister was justified neither by the UN charter nor international law.

``The Republic of Cyprus is an independent and sovereign state and it exercises its rights and sovereign duties with the signing of various agreements, which emanate from international law and the Law of the Sea,`` he said.

He added that ``the Republic of Cyprus has signed this Treaty and unfortunately Turkey has not signed it, so those breaking the law are Mr. Davudoglu and his country.``

    [02] GAROYIAN - LETTERS

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has sent letters to counterparts and Presidents of international bodies, calling them to exert their influence on Turkey to restore the rights of Greek Cypriots enclaved in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

The letter was sent to the Presidents of national parliaments of EU member states, the President of the European Parliament, the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, the Presidents of the Political Groups of the European Parliament, and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Garoyian says in his letter that on December 25 the Christmas liturgy in the Turkish occupied villages of Rizokarpaso and Ayia Triada were interrupted by the Turkish troops, which also harassed the priest and the congregation, despite the permission that had been obtained in advance for the liturgy. He explains that very few Greek Cypriots still live in the Turkish occupied areas and bear ``continuous and daily harassment and violation of their fundamental human rights.``

``All this is part of a systematic policy of national cleansing, which Turkey has been implementing in Cyprus since 1974,`` Garoyian says, adding that ``the events are also indicative of the absence of will on behalf of the Turkish side to implement any agreement, and also proof that its commitments in relation to international and European law are just words.``

    [03] BOSNIA - CYPRUS ISSUE

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj has called on the two sides in Cyprus to develop a plan to overcome their differences in the Cyprus problem, before the end of January, when President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are scheduled to meet in Geneva with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

Speaking after a meeting in Nicosia with Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou, Alkalaj, whose country is a non permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2010-2011, said that the Cyprus problem will be discussed at the Security Council in February 2011.

``We support discussions on resolving the standing differences between the two communities and we urge the two communities to develop a plan to overcome remaining differences before the Secretary Generals meeting with the two leaders at the end of January,`` he said.

Alkalaj noted that during the meeting ``we agreed to support each other`s candidacies in a number of multinational bodies which we are doing and Cyprus voted for Bosnia Herzegovina to join the Security Council and also gave strong support for visa liberalisation for the citizens of Bosnia within the EU system,`` adding that ``now citizens of Bosnia can travel freely toward the Schengen states, so we hope very soon to see large numbers of tourists here to enjoy your beautiful country.``

    [04] FM - BASKET - INCIDENT

Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou has condemned the Turkish officials efforts to exploit politically against the Republic of Cyprus, the recent incident after an international mens basketball match in Nicosia.

The incident took place right after the end of the game for the last round of Eurochallenge`s group stage, when APOEL fans attempted to attack the players of the Turkish team ``Pinar Karsiyaka``.

Kyprianou called on Turkey, instead of concentrating its actions against Cyprus for that incident, to implement its obligations and show how tolerant the country is with other religions.

In statements to the Press in Nicosia, Wednesday, Kyprianou said that, unfortunately incidents do occur during sport games, and added that last Sunday, serious incidents, during which people were injured, took place in Turkey. He noted that in the incident in Nicosia, the legal state reacted immediately and effectively, in a manner that the players of the Turkish team were not in danger.
