The top aides to the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus held a meeting in the framework of the ongoing UN-led negotiations for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to reliable sources, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay, advisors to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu respectively, discussed about the chapters of governance and power sharing and exchanged views on the chapter of economy.

The two aides agreed to continue their discussion during their next meeting, scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The same sources told CNA that it is not yet known when the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will hold a new meeting, given the fact that Dervis Eroglu is recuperating after undergoing a heart surgery last week in Ankara.

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008 to find a mutually agreed settlement that will reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

    [02] UN CMP SUPPORT

UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe has reiterated the UN readiness to continue providing support to the efforts of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP).

In a letter he sent to the three members of the CMP, he expresses thanks for the copy of the documentary Digging for a future referring to the work of the Committee and notes that this documentary provides a testimony to the fundamental work that the CMP is conducting to promote reconciliation between the two communities of the island.

Pascoe stresses that the CMP remains an exemplary model of how Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can successfully work together towards building a common future for the island. Its unwavering commitment to alleviate the suffering of the families of missing persons in both communities is to be commended. He mentions also that he remembers his visit to the center of the CMP during one of his trips to Cyprus.

    [03] MINISTRY ELECTIONS ABROAD

The Ministry of the Interior has invited all registered voters, who wish to vote abroad for the parliamentary elections of May 22, 2011, to express their interest by the end of January 2011, to facilitate preparations for the setting up of polling stations.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior Lazaros Savvides called on the registered voters abroad to fill in a form stating their country and city of preference, and submit it to either at local offices in Cyprus or via email at ``elections@moi.gov.cy`` or online at ``elections.gov.cy`` and ``moi.gov.cy``.

Savvides said available figures indicated that previous polling stations in London, Athens and Salonica would be operating for the parliamentary elections, noting that, depending on the interest expressed, other polling stations may also be set up. Options on the form include Athens, Salonica, Patra, Volos, Ioannina, Rethymno, Xanthi, London, Manchester, Brussels, Sofia and Prague.
