  • [01] CYPRUS - ISRAEL - FIRES

The fire fighting aircrafts of the Forest Department and the Police are contributing in efforts to help battle a huge forest fire close to the northern city of Haifa that has killed at least 40 people and forced mass evacuations.

Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis told reporters Friday the governments response to Israels plea was immediate. Apart from the communication that President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had yesterday, he also got in touch with Israeli officials while the Director of the Fire Service and the deputy Chief of Civil Defence are in constant communication with the relevant Israeli services.

Sylikiotis said the fire fighting aircrafts of the Forest Department and the Police were sent to Israel this morning, adding that we intend to send ground forces and material to help combat the fire.

The Israelis, he said, have asked other EU member states and Russia to help them in efforts to battle the fire.

According to Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos, the Police aircraft was the first to arrive in Israel from overseas and is actively taking part in the aid efforts.

The largest fire in Israel`s history scorched more than 7,000 acres of land and destroyed houses.

    [02] KYPRIANOU - SERBIA

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou, who is visiting Serbia, was received on Friday by President Boris Tadic, who expressed his countrys support of Cyprus efforts for reunification in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, on the basis of relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

Tadic also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Cyprus for its position and active support in the framework of the European Union regarding the issue of Kosovo.

Kyprianou said that Cyprus maintains a principled position in favour of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, which includes Kosovo and Metohija provinces, and furthermore noted that the Government considers the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo as illegal.

During a working breakfast earlier on Friday, Kyprianou and Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Yeremic discussed the Cyprus problem and Kosovo, reviewed bilateral relations and reaffirmed their excellent level.

    [03] ROMANIA - PROTOCOL

A Cooperation Protocol was signed on Friday by Cypriot Labour Minister Sotiroulla Charalambous and Romanian Minister of Labour, Family and Social Protection Ioan Botis.

The Protocol aims at coordinating the activities and operations of the two Ministries on matters concerning the provision of information to Romanian workers regarding their rights and the framework in which one can work in Cyprus.

As Cyprus and Romania are both members of the EU with a large number of Romanian people living and working in Cyprus, coordination and enhancement of relations and operations of the two Ministries is required, according to the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance of Cyprus.

At the meeting the two Ministers were particularly concerned by the need to exchange information regarding the operational context of private employment agencies.
