[01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS NY TRIPARTITE MEETINGThe President of the Republic Demetris Christofias is departing this afternoon for New York, via London, in order to meet on Thursday, November 18, with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.The meetings agenda is expected to be finalized today, following yesterdays contacts of all parties involved with the Under-Secretary-General of the UN for Political Affairs Lynn Pascoe. According to a UN Spokesperson, the Secretary-General will host the two Cypriot leaders in a working lunch on Thursday, followed by a meeting in the afternoon. The tripartite meeting is expected to last two hours. The spokesperson also said that an announcement referring to the working lunch and the ensuing meeting would be issued soon. The office of the UN Under-Secretary-General has already informed all parties involved. Pascoe had a series of meetings yesterday with the Ambassadors of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, as well as Eroglus representative, to discuss the latest details concerning the meeting. The meeting in New York will be held upon the invitation of the UN Secretary-General to the two leaders. Peace talks are currently underway between President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country, under a federal roof. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] US TRIAPARTITE MEETINGThe US is confident that an agreement meeting the aspirations of both communities in Cyprus is attainable, a State Department official has said, referring to the meeting to be held on November 18 in New York between UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglou.The official said, The United States supports the Cypriot-led negotiations under the auspices of the UN Secretary General`s Good Offices Mission led by Alexander Downer, and the parties` efforts in those negotiations to reach a settlement that reunifies the island as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.`` ``UNSYG Bans invitation to President Christofias and Turkish-Cypriot Leader Eroglu is part of this process,`` he added. [03] MUNICIPALITIES DENOUNCE UDINine Turkish occupied Municipalities of Cyprus, namely Famagusta, Kyrenia, Morphou, Lysi, Lapethos, Kythrea, Karavas, Lefkoniko and Akanthou denounced unanimously the illegal declaration of the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime twenty-seven years ago.Addressing the event organized by the municipalities, Director of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias Office Christos Christofides underlined that Turkey continues its efforts to upgrade the pseudostate using the lifting of Turkish Cypriots so-called isolation as an alibi. He underlined that President Christofias is going to New York for his meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu and will try to pave the way for a Cyprus settlement the soonest possible. Famagusta Mayor Alexis Galanos pointed out that their role is not just to meet and denounce the Turkish invasion and occupation and the illegal declaration of the pseudostate but to try to end occupation and reunite the country and its people and promote the recognition and implementation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots. The President of the European Network of Elected Greeks in Local Authorities, George Kontorinis said that a resolution adopted by the networks General Assembly denounces the ongoing Turkish occupation of a part of Cyprus and calls on the international community, the UN and the EU to exert pressure on Ankara to immediately withdraw its troops from Cyprus and the thousands of illegal settlers. [04] STOCKHOLM SEMINAR CYPRUS CIVILISATIONA seminar on the Cypriot civilization and the cultural relations between Cyprus and Sweden took place in Stockholm last week, organized by the Embassy of Cyprus in Sweden, in the framework of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus.The aim of the event was to promote the role of Cyprus as a crossroads of civilizations from the East to West, through the findings of the Swedish Archaeological Mission in Cyprus. It also projected the role of the mission in the continued research of Cypriot archaeology and enhancing the cultural relations of the two countries as well as promoting the destruction of the cultural heritage from the continued Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus. The seminar was attended by members of Parliament, the vice speaker of the Swedish parliament, academics, diplomats, journalists and members of the Greek and Cypriot community. Cyprus Attache, Maria Savvidou-Panagiotou, in her speech, outlined the history and culture of Cyprus, pointing out the influences of great ancient civilizations in the development of Cypriot art.
