  • [01] PARLIAMENT PSEUDOSTATE

The House of Representatives, in view of the 27th anniversary of the declaration of the pseudostate in the Turkish occupied areas of the island, reaffirmed on Thursday the determination of the people of Cyprus to resist the occupation and continue the struggle to lift the consequences of the invasion and reach a just, functional and viable solution of the Cyprus problem.

Speaking during Thursday`s plenary session, Acting President of the House Andreas Angelides said ``the House of Representatives deplores, once again, the illegal declaration of the Turkish occupation pseudostate`` on 15 November 1983 and ``reiterates the demand for the revocation of that illegality, as provided for in Security Council resolutions and many calls from the international community.``

He said the House insists on ``a just, functional and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, which will terminate the illegality, the occupation and the settling, and will restore and guarantee the rights of Cyprus and its people.``

    [02] BRITISH MP STRAW STATEMENT

MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has condemned comments made by senior Labour MP and former Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, in The Times.

Straw called on the UK Government to consider a formal partition of Cyprus into two separate states and criticised former President of Cyprus, the late Tassos Papadopoulos for campaigning for a no vote in the referendum on the Annan Plan.

Jack Straws comments go against a political consensus that has lasted for decades, namely that the island is Cyprus is one country in international law and that its people should be reunited. The Conservatives have made it very clear that we strongly oppose partition.

We have always supported the efforts being made by Cypriots to find a just, lasting and peaceful settlement that sees Cyprus reunited with its people living together again in one country with a single international personality and single citizenship Theresa said.

    [03] MEP ERDOGAN STATEMENTS

Member of the European Parliament Philippe Juvin has denounced statements by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said that ``as long as Turkey does not become an EU member, the EU will not acquire a decisive role in the global political scene.``

Juvin noted that Erdogan`s behaviour confirms what many people in Europe are afraid of, that Turkey is behaving as a conqueror and that it wants to impose their way of thought to other EU member states.

Juvin asked Turkey to withdraw its troops which continue to occupy an EU member state and urged Erdogan to stop delivering lessons to Europeans.
