  • [01] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS PROBLEM

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has invited Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leader to lock themselves in a room and stay there until they decide on a Cyprus settlement which will be in line with UN resolutions and two agreements, clinched in the 1970s between the islands two communities.

His remarks come in the wake of a statement made by Minister for EU Affairs and chief negotiator of Turkey in accession talks with the European Union Egemen Bagis who had said that the procedure to elect a Pope should be adopted in the case of Cyprus, in relation to efforts to find a negotiated political settlement. He said Turkish Prime Minister Tayip Erdogan, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Eroglu must be locked up in a room and not come out until they find a solution to the issue.

The Turkish leadership should take Mr. Eroglu and lock themselves in a room and not come out until they decide that the solution to the Cyprus issue is the one provided by UN resolutions and the High Level Agreements, said Stephanou.

He also said the Turkish leadership together with Eroglu must decide that the solution is that of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, which provides for one state with a single sovereignty, citizenship and international personality. The solution should end the occupation and reunite the territory and people of Cyprus, he added.

Therefore the Turkish leadership must decide to withdraw its occupation troops, stop the influx of illegal Turkish settlers to Cyprus and align its policy with the UN resolutions on Cyprus so that the issue can soon be resolved, he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

    [02] ARMENIAN SPEAKER CYPRIOT SPEAKER

President of the Armenian National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan has assured his Cypriot counterpart Marios Garoyian that his country will help so that all the problems concerning Cyprus will be resolved in a fair manner.

On his part, Garoyian said that the excellent relations of the two parliaments and peoples were reaffirmed during the meeting.

In his remarks, Abrahamya said that Armenia considers Cyprus a very friendly country and we will do our utmost so that Cyprus will be very powerful in this specific region.

We will help so that all problems concerning Cyprus will be resolved in a fair manner, this is the reality and this is our position, the Armenian Speaker added.

    [03] FINANCE MINISTER ECONOMY

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis presented figures of the first nine months of 2010, which indicate an improvement of the public deficit by 37 million EUR and the conservative projections of the Ministry of Finance concerning the fourth quarter of the year and the fiscal situation in 2011.

Stavrakis noted that, based on a conservative forecast, it appears that the public deficit for 2010 will be slightly under 6%, and noted that Eurostat will revise the deficit for 2009, possibly to 5.9% from 6.1%, which was the preliminary estimate of the Ministry.

He also said that he would be visiting London, Paris and Munich next week, with an aim to secure up to 1 million EUR, through state bonds, in order to pay off a debt that is expiring.

According to Stavrakis, the third quarter of 2010 was ``very good`` regarding the growth rate of the economy, mainly due to the tourism sector. Referring to fiscal forecasts for 2011, Stavrakis said that the projected growth rate was 1.5% compared to 1.8% by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the carry over effect would be 1%, inflation 3%, and the GDP increase 4.5%.

[04] MINISTER OF DEFENCE NATIONAL GUARD

As long as the Turkish troops remain in Cyprus, the National Guard will continue to arm itself, Cyprus Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas has said.

As long as Turkish troops step on the territory our semi-occupied home country, the National Guard will continue to arm itself and upgrade its capacity, in order to constitute a solid deterrent Papacostas said, while addressing the new black beret recruits at a military ceremony.

``We will never put in danger the operational and defence capability of the National Guard and we will never put in danger the security of our land and of our people,`` Papacostas added.

It is not easy to invert the status quo, created 36 years ago after the double crime of the coup detat and the Turkish invasion, the Minister continued, adding that there is no other option than to continue the fight for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.
