    Russia is dedicated to the position of finding a just, comprehensive and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev assures in a congratulatory letter he sent to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus.

    Medvedev noted the long-standing and consistent relations of friendship and co-operation between the two countries, based on trust and mutual understanding, adding that there are great prospects for a steady development of bilateral political, commercial, financial and cultural cooperation.

    The proximity of the positions of Russia and Cyprus on the majority of fundamental international problems, he said, also constitutes a solid basis for ensuring stability and security both in Europe and the Mediterranean.

    Medvedev also conveyed his conviction that joint efforts for the preparation of the first ever official visit of a Russian President to Cyprus will also serve to further strengthen the bilateral relations for the benefit of both peoples.

    [02] CLINTON - CYPRUS - INDEPENDENCE

    US Secretary of State, Foreign Minister, Hillary Clinton reiterated US resolute support to the ongoing Cyprus negotiations aiming at reunifying the island on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

    We commend efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement she underlined in a written congratulatory statement to congratulate Cyprus Republic on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

    Cyprus has been a crossroads between east and west, and for people and cultures dating back thousands of years. The United States values the long-standing friendship between our countries. Throughout 50 years of bilateral relations, we have built a strong partnership, and we look forward to working together to expand our relationship in the future, Clinton stressed.

    [03] DEFENCE MINISTERS CYPRUS - SLOVAKIA

    Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas met in Nicosia on Saturday his Slovak counterpart Lubomir Galko, in the presence of Slovakian Ambassador Anna Tourenikova.

    According to an official announcement they discussed issues of common interest, recent developments in the Cyprus problem, the excellent co-operation between the two countries, as well as the possibility of further strengthening the bilateral relations in defence matters.

    Papacostas thanked the Slovak Minister for the interest demonstrated by his country to maintain peace in Cyprus with the participation of 210 Slovak soldiers at the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

    Galko assured the Cypriot Minister that despite the financial crisis Slovakia is not going to reduce the number of soldiers participating in UNFICYP.
