  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS PAPANDREOU MEETING

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou held a meeting Wednesday in New York during which they reaffirmed the close cooperation and coordination which exists between the two governments as regards efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

In statements after the meeting, President Christofias expressed once more his gratitude towards the Greek Prime Minister for his daily support in our efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

This support gives me strength he said, reiterating the need for unity at the domestic front.

President Christofias said that despite the economic problems faced by the Greek government, the Greek Premier, in all his meetings with heads of state and government, stresses the Cyprus problem and the need for a just and viable solution.

In his statements, Papandreou reiterated his full support towards President Christofias efforts to reach a solution in Cyprus, stressing the close cooperation and coordination which exists between the two governments for a solution based on the UN resolutions and the EU acquis communautaire.

He noted that on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly they make the necessary contacts to promote President Christofias proposals, which, if adopted, will contribute to a great extent to a new impetus for the Cyprus problem.

In July, the Cypriot President announced three proposals on the Cyprus issue. The first suggests the linking of the discussion of three of the chapters of the Cyprus problem, those dealing with property, territory and immigration, for easing the resolution of the thorny chapter of properties and for expediting the dialogue.

The second proposal urges Turkey to apply UN Security Council resolution 550, which calls for the transfer of the fenced off area of Varosha, in Famagusta, to the administration of the United Nations. Part of this proposal is the opening of the port of Famagusta under EU auspices to benefit the Turkish Cypriots.

The third proposal is to convene an international conference when within range of an agreement on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem.

UN led talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

    [02] GREEK PM TURKISH PRESIDENT

The Cyprus problem was amongst the issues examined during a meeting Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou had with Turkish President Abdullah Gul on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Present at the meeting were the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, Demetris Droutsas and Ahmet Davutoglu.

Diplomatic sources said that during the discussion on the Cyprus issue, the Greek Premier called on the Turkish side to show genuine will and take the necessary steps to achieve real progress in the negotiations and a solution to be reached.

Sources said the Turkish President repeated the Turkish positions, that Turkey supports the procedure for a solution to the Cyprus issue and has shown willingness to support the Annan Plan, adding that efforts must be intensified to find a solution by the end of the year.

    [03] FM UN ASSEMBLY MEETINGS

Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou had on Wednesday separate meetings with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Malta Ôonio Borg, Deputy Foreign Minister of Mexico Lourdes Aranda, Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, Foreign Minister of Belarus Sergei Martynov, Foreign Minister of Georgia Gricol Vashadze and the Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian.

Kyprianou discussed with all his counterparts bilateral relations and their further development. He also informed them about the Cyprus problem. Moreover he discussed issues of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation with the Foreign Minister of Malta.

He also signed a Memorandum of co-understanding for the establishment of a mechanism for political deliberations with the Foreign Minister of Argentina, while with the Foreign Minister of Armenia he discussed among others the forthcoming visit of the President of Armenia to Cyprus.
