  • [01] LEADERS - NEW MEETING

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will be meeting on Friday in the context of direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

The meeting will be held at the old Nicosia airport in the UN buffer zone.

After their last meeting on August 31, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said the leaders of the two communities had agreed to meet on Friday and then, on September 7 and 10, would be holding intensive talks.

    [02] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS ISSUE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has called on the Turkish side to show a spirit of cooperation and accept the proposals he has put forward, noting that those proposals will facilitate negotiations for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Addressing an event in Nicosia to honour the victims of World War II, President Christofias pointed out the necessity for unity among political forces, in order to show the people and the international community that ``Cyprus must and can be reunified on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, with political equality, as defined in UN Security Council resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international identity.``

He added that the proposals he put forward for a solution prove that ``our side is a step ahead in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem,`` and that ``the way our proposals were received internationally is at least encouraging.``

``We once again call on the Turkish side to show a spirit of cooperation and flexibility, and accept these proposals, which will substantially facilitate the negotiations and the atmosphere in which they are being held,`` he said.

    [03] LIBERMAN - CYPRUS VISIT

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Avigdor Liberman arrives on Thursday night in Cyprus on a two-day visit.

On Friday afternoon Liberman will have a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou. The two Ministers will hold talks with the participation of delegations from the Foreign Ministries of both countries.

The discussion will focus on bilateral relations, relations between Israel and the EU, the Middle East peace process and the initiative taken by the governments of Cyprus and Greece for Gaza. Kyprianou will brief his Israeli counterpart on the current phase of the ongoing negotiations for the Cyprus problem.

On Saturday morning, Liberman will meet the leader of the main opposition party Democratic Rally (DISY) Nikos Anastasiades, and in the evening he returns home.
