  • [01] ARCHBISHOP - CYPRUS ISSUE

Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has called on the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser in Cyprus Alexander Downer to respect the principles of the UN and stop promoting Turkish positions.

He furthermore called on President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias to request the removal of Downer from his position if the later ``maintains his detrimental, for our side, stance.``

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 23rd meeting of the Central Council of overseas Cypriot organisations POMAK and PSEKA, and the 5th congress of overseas Cypriot youth organisation NEPOMAK, the Archbishop called for unity of the political leadership in Cyprus and the promotion of positions to tackle Turkish aims, adding that Turkey would withdraw its intransigent positions only if it pays the price in its EU accession negotiations.

The Archbishop expressed fear that ``we have already crossed the safety line and we have become trapped in a countdown concerning our historical existence in the land of our fathers,`` adding that Turkey has been following a policy of no concessions, while the Greek Cypriot side has been generous, in the hope to reach a settlement.

    [02] VANACKERE - CYPRUS

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs of Belgium Steven Vanackere will be in Cyprus on August 26 and 27 for a visit, at the invitation of Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou.

During his stay, Vanackere will be received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian and Archbishop Chrysostomos II.

Kyprianou and Vanackere will hold talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem, relations between the EU and Turkey, the Belgian EU presidency priorities, and regional issues.

He will also meet President of the Democratic Rally Nicos Anastasiades and will visit UN headquarters and the humanitarian laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus.

    [03] SYLIKIOTIS - CHINA

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis departs for China on Wednesday, heading a delegation, to attend events to mark Cyprus` national day, at the Shanghai EXPO 2010, on August 28.

The Cypriot pavilion is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, and will present the independent state as an amalgam of tradition and innovation, touring the visitors through the rich history and culture of the island.

During his stay in China, Sylikiotis will meet his Chinese counterpart Li Guo, the Deputy General Secretary of the Shanghai local government, and other state officials.
