  • [01] RUSSIA CYPRUS 50 YEARS DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS

The Presidents of Cyprus and Russia, Demetris Christofias and Dmitri Medvedev, have exchanged congratulatory messages to mark 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his message, President Christofias refers to the close ties of friendship between the people of the two countries, and points out the support Cyprus received from the Soviet Union and then the Russian Federation.

President Christofias notes Russia`s role in the adoption of UN resolutions concerning Cyprus and expresses gratitude for the constant support of Russia, based on principles, to the struggle to defend the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.

He also refers to bilateral relations, which he said are at their best ever in all sectors and stand as an example for relations between states.

Regarding the forthcoming visit of Medvedev to Cyprus, scheduled for October, President Christofias says the historic visit will serve as a milestone in relations between the two countries.

In his message, Medvedev assures Russia will continue efforts to establish security and stability in Europe and the Mediterranean region, and will contribute to achieving a just and comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

He also refers to the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, adding that respect contributes to the development of bilateral political, commercial, financial and humanitarian cooperation.

Medvedev expresses certainty that talks in Cyprus in October will be effective and will contribute to further deepening their fruitful dialogue.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias is currently engaged in peace talks with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite the country under a federal roof.

    [02] BANKS - LOAN CRITERIA

Cypriot Banks have tightened the criteria for granting loans to businesses and households in the second quarter of 2010, in comparison with the first quarter of the year, according to the Bank Lending Survey, released here today by the Central Bank of Cyprus.

The survey indicates that the demand for loans from businesses during the second quarter of 2010 remained stable. The demand for housing loans by households also remained stable. At the same time demand for consumer loans by households fell by 10% over the previous quarter.

According to the banking institutions that participated in the survey, the third quarter of 2010 the criteria are expected to remain unchanged.

The survey notes that for the first time since early 2009, contrary to expectations, there were more stringent criteria for granting housing loans to households.

    [03] RYANAIR PRESS CONFERENCE

Ryanair, the low cost airline, has announced its first route to Cyprus starting November this year, to and from Larnaca and Brussels.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Nicosia, Ryanair Marketing Executive Laura McCormack said Ryanair is pleased to announce its first route from Larnaca to Brussels Charleroi and a further route to be confirmed very soon. The second route will start operating this winter. These routes will provide Cypriot consumers and visitors with low fares for the first time, she added.

As regards the fares, McCormack said that the ticket from Larnaca to Brussels will cost 34.99 EUR, including taxes.

To celebrate the new route, Ryanair is launching 500,000 seats of 5 EUR, for travel across Europe in September, which are available for booking until midnight Monday, August 23.
