  • [01] GUATEMALA - CYPRUS SOLUTION - SUPPORT

Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom Caballeros has expressed his support to President Christofias recent initiative on the Cyprus problem, and pointed out that it demonstrates once more the sincere and constructive stance of the Cypriot government.

According to an official announcement, receiving the credentials of Cyprus` new Ambassador to Guatemala, based in Mexico City, Vassilis Philippou, the President of Guatemala expressed his countrys support to efforts for a just, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus problem

Philippou briefed the Guatemalan President on the proposals Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has submitted in the framework of talks to reach a settlement of the Cyprus problem in an effort to give the negotiating process a new impetus.

He also announced Cyprus offer of humanitarian aid amounting 10.000 euros to Guatemala. Caballeros thanked the government of Cyprus for its generous offer and reiterated his governments support to the efforts for a political settlement in Cyprus.

Furthermore, President Caballeros stressed that President Christofias initiative to submit a new package of proposals demonstrates once more Nicosias sincere and constructive stance and assured that Guatemala will support this new initiative for a solution based on UN resolutions and international law.

Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. UN-led talks have been going on since September 2008 with a view to reunite the country under a federal roof.

The three-tier proposals the President has submitted at the negotiating table during the UN-led talks are as follows: the first proposal provides for the connection of discussions on the property issue to the issues of territory and immigration, citizenship, aliens and asylum. Property and territory are considered to be two of the most hotly contested issues at the talks President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are engaged in.

The second proposal calls for the implementation of Security Council resolution 550 which provides for the return of the fenced off area of Varosha, now under Turkish occupation, to the UN. The objective of the proposal is to restore the town and return it to its legitimate inhabitants. The proposal envisages also the opening of the citys port for trade for Turkish Cypriots, under EU supervision, as well as the restoration of the walled city of Famagusta (old part of the city).

The third proposal relates to convening an international conference on Cyprus, once the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot side are within reach of an agreement on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem. This conference must be called by the UN, and apart from the Republic of Cyprus and the islands two communities, the EU, the five permanent members of the Security Council and Cyprus three guarantor powers will attend (Greece, Turkey and Britain are the guarantor powers according to the 1960 Constitution).

    [02] RYANAIR FLIGHTS TO CYPRUS

After many weeks of intense negotiations, Irish low cost airline Ryanair has agreed to include Larnaka in its destinations. The decision was taken on Monday evening and Hermes Airports has already been informed. Hermes Airports Spokesman Adamos Aspris has described the decision as a very important development. He said Ryanairs presence on the island will further enrich Cyprus air connections with Europe and will be a catalyst in efforts to increase the influx of tourism to the island.

Ryanair is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday in Nicosia to announce the decision to start flights to and from Cyprus. Hermes Airports, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the Cypriot government have been coordinating efforts to bring the Irish airline to Cyprus.

    [03] MORPHOU RESOLUTION OCCUPATION

The Municipality and organizations of the occupied town of Morphou handed over on Monday a resolution to the Ambassadors of the five UN Security Council permanent members, the Representation of the European Commission, the President of the Republic and the President of the House of Representatives, asking for a just and viable solution to reunite Cyprus.

The resolution was handed over on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the occupation of the city by the advancing Turkish troops, on August 16, 1974.

The Mayor and the members of the delegation of the occupied town visited consecutively the Embassies of USA, Russia, France and China, the UK High Commission and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus.
