  • [01] LEADERS - MEETING

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu will be meeting on Tuesday in the context of direct talks to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The meeting will be held in the presence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim, in the UN Protected Area of Nicosia.

Speaking after the last meeting on August 4, Buttenheim had said it was ``a positive sign`` that the meetings were continuing in August.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] PRESIDENT FAMAGUSTA EVENT PROPOSALS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that the first reaction of the international community as regards the three proposals he had submitted last month on the Cyprus issue, is very positive.

Addressing an anti-occupation event organised by the Famagusta Municipality to mark 36 years since the illegal seizure and occupation of the town of Famagusta by the Turkish military, the Cypriot President said the three proposals aim to address Turkeys intransigent stance on the Cyprus issue. He also noted that these proposals could be presented with arguments to the EU and the international community.

The first reaction of the international community to our proposals is very positive, he pointed out.

    [03] BULGARIAN SAILOR MISSING

The Search and Rescue Coordination Centre in Cyprus is continuing efforts to find 40-year-old Bulgarian, Georgi Salabatanov, who was lost at sea in the Limassol area on Sunday afternoon.

Captain of private yacht ``Abalone`` reported that Salabatanov, a member of the crew, had gone overboard four nautical miles from the coast of St. Raphael hotel in Limassol.

Flight lieutenant of the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre George Savva told CNA that the search operation was spanning along the coast from Limassol Port to the area of Mari village, where the nautical base ``Evangelos Florakis`` is situated, up to five nautical miles out.

[04] GREECE LOVE CYPRUS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Greece`s national basketball team won the Love Cyprus Basketball Tournament on Sunday, beating Croatia 90-81.

At the Tournament, which was held at the ``Tassos Papadopoulos - Eleftheria`` stadium in Nicosia and at the Spyros Kyprianou arena in Limassol, Greece won all three games it played. On Sunday, Germany beat Russia 76-73 and took second place.
