  • [01] LEADERS NEW MEETING

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu continue their discussions on the property issue during a meeting this Wednesday morning at the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

Meanwhile tonight, at 2000 local time (1700 GMT), President Christofias and Dervis Eroglu will dine together at Eroglu`s house, situated in the Turkish-occupied northern part of capital Nicosia. The two leaders`s spouses and advisors, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay, will attend the dinner.

UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said after the leaders` last meeting on July 22 that Christofias and Eroglu had a long and a good meeting in the sense that they were able to talk very frankly with each other about issues that they have, and differences that they have, and convergences that they are confident they can build.

The property issue was also discussed by the advisors of the two leaders, George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay.

According to Downer, the leaders will also meet on August 4 and August 10.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeded Talat in April this year.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

    [02] CYPRUS PROTEST TURKEY AIRCRAFT

Minister of Communications and Works Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis has protested strongly to the EU and international organizations the restrictive measures which Turkey applies against Cypriot aircraft.

The protest letter she sent was addressed to the EU Commissioner responsible for Transport Siim Kallas, the General Director of EUROCONTROL David McMillan, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and her EU counterparts.

Turkey, whose troops occupy Cyprus northern areas, does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus. Ankara, in spite of repeated calls from Brussels, refuses to open its air space to Cypriot aircraft, an obligation it has to meet as part of its accession negotiation course.
