[01] DROUTSAS TURKEY CYPRUS ISSUEGreek Alternate Foreign Minister Demetris Droutsas has urged Turkey to do whatever necessary to help find a solution of the Cyprus problem.In an interview with France24, Droutsas expressed certainty that a solution of the Cyprus problem can soon be reached, provided there is political will from all interested parties. Calling on Ankara and Turkeys supporters to do whatever necessary to achieve a political solution in Cyprus, Droutsas stressed that the solution must be viable. The solution of the Cyprus problem, he added, must constitute a guarantee for both communities in Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, that they will enjoy a common future within the EU. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Peace talks are currently underway between President Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu, under UN auspices. [02] TRADE UNIONS SALARIESTrade unions, representing the wider public sector, have accepted to renew the collective agreements of their members without any salary increase.At the trade unions meeting, which took place Wednesday, General Secretary of the Cyprus Workers` Confederation (SEK), Nikos Moiseos, said that employees in the public sector are making a great sacrifice by accepting no increase in their salaries. Employees in the public sector are making a great sacrifice by accepting zero increase and they expect similar sacrifices from others, he added, noting that they will monitor the economic situation. [03] EXAMS RESULTS UNIVERSITIESResults of entrance exams for the state higher education institutions in Cyprus were announced here on Wednesday by the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou.He told a press conference here today that candidates competed in 95 lessons and 217 examiners had worked to prepare the exam papers, under strict conditions. A total of 2.243 places were allocated through the first allocation of places, on the basis of the results of the 2010 pancyprian exams. Demetriou said that 1.399 places at the University of Cyprus were allocated, 700 at the Technological University of Cyprus, 90 at the Higher Hotel Institute, 52 at the Military Schools of Greece and two at Drama Schools of Greece. Moreover 95 places were allocated for students who graduated from Technical and Evening Schools. [04] UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS REPORT 2009The year 2009 was a successful one for the University of Cyprus as regards teaching and research activities as well as infrastructure and increase in the number of students.Presenting Wednesday the Universitys report for 2009, the Rector of the University of Cyprus Stavros Zenios said that the number of students now stands at 6,000 but the goal is to increase this number to 7,000 by 2013-2014. According to the report, postgraduate students account for 25% of the total number of students. Zenios told a press conference that in 2009 the University of Cyprus ranked 1,192 worldwide (2,412 in 2008), adding that we aim to be among the first 1000 in the world. The goals for 2010 include the establishment of a Postgraduate Studies School, the upgrading of the administration for research purposes and the creation of a research centre, he said.
