Russia firmly supports the positions of principle of the Republic of Cyprus and the UN Security Council resolutions concerning the Cyprus issue, Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou has said.

In statements at Larnaka Airport before departing for Moscow, where he will pay an official visit to the Russian Federation June 21-22, Kyprianou referred to his meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

He said they will discuss bilateral issues, aiming at further enhancing the existing excellent co-operation between Cyprus and Russia. Kyprianou will also brief his Russian counterpart on the current phase of the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The EU - Russia relations, as well as other regional and international issues will also be discussed at the meeting, he said.

``I want to emphasise that Russia is and remains a firm supporter of the positions of principle the Republic of Cyprus, of the relevant UN Security Council resolution and the international law``, he stressed.

Commenting on press reports that Russia changed its stance on Cyprus, the Foreign Minister underlined that ``the Russian Federation has never changed its stance, it is our most important, together with other friendly countries, supporter at the UNSC and thanks to its efforts we could achieve a balanced resolution, which does not change the basic principles and parameters for the solution of the Cyprus problem``, he said, referring to the resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus.

The Cypriot FM will also discuss with his Russian counterpart the preparations for the forthcoming visit, in October, of the President of Russian Federation Dmitry Medvendev to Cyprus.

Replying to questions, he said that there are preparations for a visit to Cyprus of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, but noted that this depends on her program and on other developments in Germany.

[02] RUSSIAN MINISTRY CYPRIOT FM VISIT

Russian relations with Cyprus are evolving in an atmosphere of traditional friendship and mutual sympathy, Spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrei Nesterenko, has said in an interview to RIA Novosti ahead of Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou`s visit to Moscow.

Top-level and high-level political contacts have been maintained between the two countries, Nesterenko said, referring to the successful official visit in November 2008 of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, to the Russian Federation.

Kyprianous visit, he added, falls in the framework of the protocol signed in June 1994 on consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries.

Nesterenko said that Kyprianou will have talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The two Ministers, he said, will discuss a broad spectrum of bilateral and international issues, including the Cyprus issue.
